advice on my itenerary please

I am leaving for India on friday, and am spending 2 weeks there before moving on to nepal. Here is the itinerary we were thinking of following. We arrive and leave from delhi.

Delhi - 2 nights
Agra - 2 nights
Bundi - 2 nights
Chittorgarh - 2 nights
Ajmer - 1 night
Pushkar - 3 nights
Delhi - 2 nights

We are mainly interested in simply experiencing the culture of the people, although temples, forts and palaces hold some interest as well, although not as much.

Cut out 1 of the Agra nights -it's a bit of a dump, only good for seeing Taj, and spend the extra day at one of your other places.BTW I think Taj is closed 1 day per week (could be Friday).

Agra may be a dump, but it has got far more than just the Taj! However, I agree with a single night halt there - the second day should be spent at Fatehpur Sikri, before moving on to Chittorgarh, etc.

And yes, the Taj is certainly closed on Fridays.

And have you already been to Udaipur? Because it seems strange to go to Chittor and be so close to Udaipur and not stop there. We' dcut out a night in Delhi or Agra and also the night in Ajmer (or one of the nights in Pushkar) in order to add Uaipur.

The reason we are spending two nights in Agra is because our visit falls on our 2nd anniversary, so we are planning on staying in a fancy hotel and living it up for a couple of days. We might well take one of those days to see fatephur.

I'll look into Udaipur more closely.

Does anyone have some advice as to what places we should check out in delhi? again, we're more interested in going to places that will let us explore indian culture than going sight seeing.

trip!

HI THERE.
Well, that is an interesting itineary, and definately a bit unusual. I see you are not visiting JAIPUR, or JODPHUR, or UDAIPUR, and spending 4 days in the PUSHKAR/Ajmer area, 2 nites in bundi and 2 in Chittorgargh..I would probably suggest to change around the trip a bit, and add some of these other very lively areas, if you want to soak in the atmosphere of Rajasthan in all its colors . About Pushkar, well is lovely and peaceful, but would not sugggest 3 days/ and then another night in ajmer...Too much time there in your short trip...(unless it is the Fair!)
I might suggest something like this(more or less), delhi, Agra, Pushkar, UDAIPUR, cHITTOGARGH, bUNDI, JAIPUR..by the way, where do you plan to stay in PUSHKAR, pushkar palace?. and where in Agra?,,I hope it is the Amarvilas! OH looking voer your comments i see u are spending alot of time in Delhi, 2 nights before and 2 nights after. i think, better to spend more time on the road in rajashtan, and if ya want can do alot of shopping and such, JAIPUR would be a great place.. OKAY, take carE AND feel free to drop me a line with any questions.

Leave out Ajmer as it's easily visited from Pushkar, dump a day in Delhi and Agra too. Instead take in Udaipur and the surrounding sites at Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh you won't be disappointed!!
Bundi is wonderful by the way and there are some really atmopheric places to stay!!

here are my updated thoughts. thank you for your advice

Delhi - 2 nights
Agra - 2 nights (with a visit to Fatehpur Sikri)
Bundi - 2 nights
Chittorgarh - 2 nights
Udaipur - 2 nights
Pushkar - 3 nights
Delhi - 1 night

would it be better to spend a night in fatehpur sikri, or simply go there as a day trip from agra and then head back for the night? If we did spend a night in fatehpur, how complicated would getting to bundi be?

Aslo, I'm thinking about cutting out chittorgarh, and give ourselves an extra night in both bundi and udaipur. any thoughts on this?

Well if you want to move on after Fatehpur Sikri why not fit in a visit to the Keoladeo Ghana national park, a bird sanctuary about 25 minutes from Fatehpur. There are many hotels to choose from to suit all budgets all near the park and the park itself is really really worth a visit.
This will give you a bit of something other than all the monuments, from here you can carry on by train to Kota the closest railhead to Bundi.
I with an early start seeing Fatehpur and the bird park is doable (not ideal of course but your time is limited) many people doing the golden triangle tour do both in a day!!
Just a suggestion!

here's a link to the park
Birds birds birds and a few mammals

Happy Traveling

how long would a journey from bharatpur to bundi be?

also, would you recommend 3 nights in bundi and 2 in udaipur, or the other way round?

Bharatpur to Kota is apprx. 3hrs 40min. by train and from Kota to Bundi is an hour by bus.

I haven't been to Bundi, but in my opinion, Udaipur is certainly not worth three nights!!

would it be a better bet for us to simply find train tickets, accomodation, etc. as we go along our route? or should we visit a travel agent once we arrive in delhi who can help us plan some of it out in advance? We are wanting part of the adventure to be the travelling, but at the same time we don't want to spend ALL of our time arranging things.

3 days in Pushkar.. I found it over rated and would cut that down.

Udaipur definitely.

You may want to leave your options faily open regards bookings and perhaps visit travel agents in each of the places you're staying. Most ( and there are MANY ) are efficient and a half hour visit will see you happily on your way. Rail tickets booken in the morning will be ready for collection that evening ( for a small charge ) and will save you all the hassle of going to the stations / getting the numbers / queuing at the wrong counter etc. Fine if you've time on your hands.

Enjoy !
