32 days in rajasthan - itinerary input

hi everyone,

i have 32 days to travel through rajasthan, with a possible trip to ahmedabad. i am wondering if the following number of days for each city/location is sufficient, or perhaps excessive. i would appreciate input for an ideal amount of time for each destination, and any additional locations that may be interesting. thanks in advance.

jaipur - 5 days (flying to/return from)

pushkar - 4 days

bundi - 2 days

udaipur - 4/5 days ... (mt. abu?)

jodpur - 2/3 days

jaisamier - 4 days

ahmedabad - 3 days

total: about 25 days

i plan to travel by bus and train, so i want to allow time for that.
and with about 9 days remaining, how many should i allot for traveling and any suggestions for the remaining days?

thank you again!!

What month are you considering, Jen.? You certainly have a nice ample time to see and do much without getting too tired out by a rushed trip. You would be able to do all here plus some other ideas fitting in side trips e.g. Udaipur -Bundi, visit Chittaurgarh in between; Udaipur-Jodhpur - try to see Ranakpur and Khumbalgarh Fort; you may have enough time also to go to Mt Abu which is nice as well.

hi aishah. thanks for the reply. i will be in rajasthan for the month of march. i am glad you think that i have enough time to go to all the places i listed because i was starting to think i was being too ambitious.

i will add those other places on to my list and certainly make it to a couple! thanks so much!

I think you should include Mt Abu, for a pleasant change, between the lakes and the desert forts.

You should allow more time for Bundi than for Pushkar. Bundi is fantastic.

In fact, I'd suggest avoiding Pushkar altogether - it's a tourist trap with little, if anything, to commend it, and there are so many other places more deserving of your time. But if you really must go then a day or two would be enough.

I'd suggest less time in Jaipur and Jodhpur, more time in Bundi and definitely see Ranakpur and Kumbalgarth - there are nice places to stay around there.. How about a few days in Delhi or Mumbai - we had 5 in each and loved both cities, especially Mumbai. Isn't Ahmedabad on the train route to Mumbai?

Mt Abu sounds lovely - I wish we had gone there.

Amritsar was a great overnight trip from Delhi - really worth going.

In March Pushkar should be less touristy - I think worth a visit but one night's stay would be enough for you to enjoy the lakefront with picturesque buildings etc. As Kristin suggests you could also stay a night or two either at Kumbalgarh or Ranakpur.

Hey you have enough time to explore the whole of Rajasthan. I think you should try Pushkar and Ajmer, they are very close to each other

hey, thanks everyone, for the responses...
i ll check out the suggested places in my LP guidebook.

its wierd, but my biggest anxiety is booking the train tickets. i wish i could do them all here from the comforts of my own room, but alas, i wont know when i will be hopping on a train till i get to a town or city. does anyone have any anxiety pills for this? ..it really seems like a hassle.

If you map out a rough timetable for yourself you might be able to fix a couple of the bookings. You can try IRCTC website to do them and if your credit card works - doesn't for some people. (Check other threads in Railways for this). Failing that when you are in India try to book them from one of the cities as soon as possible. It shouldn't be a huge hassle - some places have excellent agents who can do the job for you, or you can go to Tourist Bureau in main centres and get Foreign Quotas.

I know you will think I am crazy....But I suggest you tweak your dates for Jaipur, Jodhpur and shorten them up. I personally felt that those two cities are highly over-rated.

Here is what I did a couple of years ago.

Udaipur to Indore by night/sleeper bus.
Arrive in Indore and take 3 hour bus to Mandu
Stay in Mandu for a few days
Then back to Indore

You can catch a bus to Bundi and other places in Rajasthan from Indore.

Buses are a more flexible option than trains. Some are sleeper with full berths. But the downside is the stops are infrequent and sometimes you need to make the driver stop to go pee.
