Hi Cinnamon,

Been in Amritsar last year. Hope I can help you

3. You can stay at the Golden Temple, the provide free accommodation for tourist. You only need to donate for food and bed.
It's a great experience (well at least for me)

4. there is a jeep from Golden Temple, you can ask them, i forget the time, it's around 1-2 pm probably.

5. there is a direct bus from Amritsar bus station to Dharamsala (5-6 hours bus journey), at 12 pm. So, you need to take taxi to reach Mcleodganj from Dharamsala bus station

7. you have to cover your head once you enter the Golden Temple, check wikipedia

8. for the ceremony, probably you can check this link http://www.amritsar.com/harmandirsahib.shtml

Hope this helps.

Cheers

1. If you got SGPC bus, it will free. But I have no idea bus is plying on your flight time. Otherwise Taxi and Tuktuk available there less than 10$. You can cehck http://www.sgpc.net/sarai-booking/index.asp or phone them for bus and accomodation.1 PM arriving is good time and you can find all your answers at airport it is not big and passener are helpful.

2. Weather in May too hot. Book a aircondition room. Go outside only in evening or morning.

3. About the hotel , Check on web and read hotel reviews.

4. Wagah Border Ceremony before sunset, Share taxi cost from 2 $. from your hotel or golden temple ? Good time to reached there is afternoon, take your passport with you, your will get seating in foreign tourists, DSLR camera is allowed but no bag. Stuff can be depostied with local shops.

5. Train Journey is good in summer, but it need advance booking, Railway station is not far, Taxi,Tuk Tuk and Rickshaw available, but in night solo travelling can be avoid, bus directly from amritsar to dharamsala available or go up to Pathankot/Chakki Bank and change from there. You can also check Volvo buses there which are comfortable and you can book it at Amritsar, Ordinary buses no need reservation.

6. Kangra Toy Train from Phatankot to Kangra, is available. But not recommended for Dharmshala. Whenever you visit Kangra if you like you can ride on it for small distance. 1st class or all economy, check with indian railway website.

7. Respect the culture and the rule when visit tourist attraction around amritsar, avoid skirt whether it is too hot there. For Golden Temple it is recommended cover your head with scarf, It is also available on gate free or cost or you can use your personal, Cap and Hat has not good impression in Sikh Religion, but some people use it.

8. Morning and evening ceremony in golden temple you can check on website, Religious kirtan and visit all day. Up to you if you get ready 4am you can be there.

9. For shopping, Amritsar is famous from centuries, lot of shops around Golden Temple or some other markets, sit in took took and he will take you there less then 1 $.

In May Dharmshala is good, Amritsar is too hot in Northern India, Between 10am to 5pm not recommended outside in Sun, In night not safe for solo woman traveller so plan accordingly.

Thank you
Best Regards,

It's a regular bus, just go to the bus station and ask the ticket to the driver's assistant (in Indonesian we call "kenek" ). It's not a private bus, you'll travel with others also. No web unfortunately, I totally forgot the exact cost, not so expensive though

I think it's the only bus, correct me if I'm wrong, so if you want to reach Dharamsala around 1 pm, you better take taxi and surely it's expensive unless you can find someone to share.

This link for Kangra toy train, but not recommended for Dharmshala for first time. There more then one station from where you can go to Dharmshala, but not sure any taxi or bus available on that train station. With luggage it will hassle.

http://indiarailinfo.com/search/path...kgmr/92/0/6327

Best is take direct bus from Amritsar to Dharmshala. In bus you have to travel with other passenger. In Punjab private buses are also plying but reputation is not so good. These operator wait until bus full with passenger. If you choose train then Amritsar to Pathankot around 3 Hrs. journey and need advance booking may be three months before. Then you have to change bus or taxi from Chakki Bank/Pathankot to Dharmshala. Not worry about this journey. From Golden temple information centre you will get informaiton or from your hotel they will provide you necessary informaiton. Some time Share Taxi's also available or State Government Run buses known as PUNBUS or Himachal has professional Drivers and Conductors. Just choose your seat and baggage can be tied on roof of bus. Talked with conductor about safety of baggage, if it is private Bus then there is space inside bus where it will safe.

After some case that happen lately in india , i think i will think twice to travel with public bus

So i will take the train to pathankot , than from there go by taxi or public bus

Nah, now i ask about taxi in pathankot, it is privat car type or there is "taxi sign", and what the reliable taxi i can use..?

because as my experience last year i got bad experience with taxi in Bihar, all is privat car, and i dont know which one is taxi which one is not

Those are stray incidents.

You can rely upon a bus travel if it is originating from a bus stand; and you have taken tickets from an authorized person.

The cars with yellow number plates are registered taxis here. You should hire a taxi from a travel agent and note down all the details like vehicle number, driver's details.

If it is not a shared taxi, you should not permit any other co-passenger traveling with you. Combination would be driver, assistant (may be accompanying or may not be) and the passenger(s) hiring the vehicle.

I was just trying to identify a taxi, nothing else... I have suggested to book a taxi/cab through a travel agent... I am not sure if you will find a yellow-number plated taxi at Pathankot.

Sorry... if I have confused the issue...

There are agents - even just opposite to Railway Station. You may get some reference in the threads of Kullu-Manali Forum.

You may also get few if google "travel agents at Pathankot".

Hello all

the last information: there is only one direct local bus (195 rupees) from amritsar to dharamsala at 11:55 AM, takes 6 hours, has one stop in patankot (3 20-3 30 pm), in dharamsala around 7 00 pm. so you can also (as i did couple of days ago) catch the last bus to mcleod(10 rupees)

forgot to say that bus in amritsar's bus station standing on the platform N34
