Travelling in North India

Hi
I am thinking about travelling to North India, and going backpacking for a week or so with a friend of mine. What advice would people who've already done this type of tour suggest to us? We will be travelling from Delhi, so perhaps travelling to the North by plane. What states in North India are worth a visit? Should we go without a tour guide and use lonely planet guides for advice on tour?

What kinds of things do you and your friend want to see/do?
when were you thinking of going?
is a week all the time you have?
have you read the LP guide and got some initial ideas?
have you had a look at other similar threads on IM yet? (there are some listed at the bottom of this page).
