I am planning to travel with my son who will be 16 months old in Oct to Punjab. I am a little concerned about the travel from Delhi to Punjab and having no car seat! I was just in India about 2 1/2 years ago and prior to that 3 years so know how crazy and unsafe the driving there really is. That stretch from Delhi to Punjab is long. Does anyone have any suggestions or alternative routes. I know car seats aren't common and I don't want to take one if I won't be able to use it! We've always traveled to Punjab by car. Has anyone tried the Shatabdi? The only concern I have with that is luggage?
Thanks, CP |

Shatabdi will be a better option than road travel.
You have following shatabdi trains available from dehli to various cities in punjab : 2013 AMRITSAR SHTBDI NEW DELHI Departure 16:30 2029 SWARNA SHTBDI NEW DELHI Departure 07:20 2031 AMRITSAR SHTBDI NEW DELHI Departure 07:20 Where exactly in punjab are you planning to go? |

Where you will be going is indeed the key question. We have lived in Punjab for the past 6 months with a 2-year old, and have traveled back and forth between Delhi several times, often by road. NH 1 is a 4 lane highway, not that heavily traveled (at least not as much as b/t Delhi and Agra) which runs through Delhi and Punjab. We are living outside of Patiala and there is an intercity express train which runs daily between Patiala and Delhi (I'm pretty sure it originates in Delhi on that side of things). It has been more or less on time (by Indian standards) when we have taken it from Patiala. The driving has seemed pretty safe (again by Indian standards) up until we have to turn off at Rajpura, where the road becomes the typical 2-lane Indian road which has 5 or 6 lanes worth of vehicles! Perhaps we're fooling ourselves, but we have been very careful to only travel during the day since my reading of accidents in the paper is that they usually occur at night/early morning.
If you're going to Chandigarh or Amritsar, the train is definitely better. If you want to know more about our experience in Punjab with a young kid, feel free to send me a private message and we can e-mail. |

We are planning to travel from Delhi to Jullundhar. Are flight will arrive in Delhi at 11:15 a.m. so would like to take a train but the problem is we don't have relatives there that can purchase our tickets ahead of time...! I only want to travel first class with my son. Any advice? I want this to be a safe and comfortable trip for him since there is going to be enough changes and also the long flight to deal with.
Thanks, CP |
