Thumbs down my appologies, kinda

I dont know what the shatabati is, but two years ago I was at the new deli railway station trying to get a ticket to go to Ludhiana, The clerks at two booths kept sending me back and fourth telling me only that booth can help me it went on and on for a couple of hours and at the same time there was a coolie who kept coming up to me trying to sell me tickets for triple the price, so I had enough of that shit and paid the coolie cuz the train was about to leave and all he gave me was a little piece of paper with nothing on it and then the guy who checks the tickets came along and signed it. and I didn't know if it was official or not and was worried about getting kicked off at the next stop, thank god I didn't, but then I was hassled by the police about what was is my suitcase even though I showed them my passport and ticket, after the search they decided I had too much alcohol with me and that Indian customs should not have allowed me through with more than two bottles, I had four, so they left me alone after taking away my bottle of grey goose.

Gurj this is a different situation. Not only customs you had broken interstate rule too. As per excise law you can carry only two bottles of alcohol from one state to another.

I noticed a lot of police doing 'Muslim' checks on trains in the north a few months ago, they walked through the unreserved and the Sleeper Class carriages and checked the tickets & luggage of anyone who looked like a Muslim.

They weren't too polite about it either.

You should have wound the buggers up by spilling the contents of two bottles and gave them the empty bottles.

I guess you are talking about the festive season...around Diwali time !! This is done due to enhanced security cover as the possibility of Terrorist attacks are on peak at festive times.

That works both ways. Ignorance by cops of the law should also not be an excuse to mint money and solicit bribes.

Because it would teach the cops a lesson plus Gurj has not mentioned whether he had crossed a border yet. Plus how do the cops know you have not paid customs on the excess alcohol or even if you have bought it in India (therefore not violated any customs regs). You can pretty much buy most brands of alcohol in India. It is obvious the b/s cops took advantage of Gurj so why not teach them a lesson, I would spill the contents of the two bottles without any fear.

I will tell you a little story about Delhi police. They had this little scam going for years whereby they would place cops at strategic road junctions at times when flights from Europe were about to land. They would then stop any cars carrying such passengers and ask how much cash the person had. Regardless of whether the passenger was carrying cash within the legally prescribed limit they would allege that the amount declared was above the cutoms level and as such they could confiscate it.

So low an behold I am stopped by such policemen. I listen to what they have to say and when they request the money I hand them over my pocket diary and ask them to phone the CM of Delhi. They soon backtrack and tell me there has been a mistake. I let loose a canon of verbal abuse and leave the scene.

On another occassion some village idiot walks upto me in the carpark of IGIA. He lets my driver get in the car before he flashes some sort of laminated card and claims he is a customs officer. He claims I have not kept some slip. I can see thorugh him, ignore him and get in the car. He tries his luck once again. This time I offer him a lift in the car to see the additional commissioner of customs. He soon makes an excuse and runs.

At IGI airport I met a guy who came from some flight from middle east and was going in the same region(ludhiana area) as me and had couple of suitcases. We agreed to share a taxi. I tried to convince him to first take a local taxi to CP ( Janpath ) and then take a taxi from there to Punjab, but he thought it was ok to take taxi for Punjab from IGI. So we ended up taking sort of prepaid cab.
The whole cab experience was horrible. And like others I would suggest that you never take interstate taxi from IGI.

If someone is travelling light or with only one suitcase then taking a Shatabdi Train would be good. ISBT would be good too or take a cab from Janpath Cannought Place.

At airport I asked the Indo-Canadian guy but he said the bus is booked full and they need a reservation three days in advance. Also Barnala is not on their route.

Side Note: Air China airline is bad too. Bad service. Flight delay costing me one whole day. For them chicken and shrimp in food is ok for a special 'Hindu vegetarian meal'. The flight attendant light over the seat has no meaning for them. The flight announcements in english weren't clear (bad pronunciations). No announcements in Hindi.

A taxi from Delhi to Barnala could cost at the rate Rs7-8/km
and Delhi --Barnala is arround 250-300 kms
Buses also ply from ISBT , (interstate bus terminal)
(I am from Punjab)
