Taxi or .. from IGI delhi airport to Punjab

Hi,
My flight got delayed so I have to re plan how I go from IGI Delhi Airport to Barnala, Punjab. Barnala is couple hours from Patiala.

I will reach Delhi at 1pm in afternoon..maybe come out of security, baggage etc by 2.30 - 3pm. I don't know if there are any direct buses that go from airport to Barnala ( its on Patiala - Bathinda route ). Most likely I will have to rent a taxi from airport.

How much the taxi costs approx. ? Any suggestions? Pre-paid taxi from airport?

Thanks.

No prepaid taxi facility from the airport. Prepaid facility is only for local destinations.
You will also not get a direct bus from the airport for Patiala. I checked train connections, unfortunately the Shatabdi Esp. departs at 2:30 PM.
If you have to take a cab for Barnala, from airport come to CP, there are lots of cab operators on Janpath. Enquire rates, check the condition of the cabs and decide.
You can take a bus from ISBT too. Plenty of services to Punjab. If you do so take state run buses of Punjab, Hariyana and Delhi. Avoid private buses.

No buses from Airport to Patiala/Barnala or anywhere else other than CP. No prepaid taxis going outside Delhi NCR.

You search on the net for a taxi with some agency in advance. Or you can log on to www.irctc.co.in and Indianrail.gov.in and check about the trains between Delhi and Patiala.

I would say getting a train would be the best option however a lot will depend on its schedule.

Thanks for the info. Any guesstimate as to how much a cab would cost from Delhi to (Barnala) Punjab?

The train that 'jyotirmony' mentioned was the best suited but looks like I would miss it, as I would come out of security, baggage etc by 2.30 - 3pm and the train is at 2.30pm.

I'm not sure if there are night bus service on that route from isbt. Also I have some luggage so it would be hard for me to walk around with it.

There is Indo Canadian bus service but from the info on their website they don't go on the Barnala route and their frequency is very less in afternoon / evening.

The going rate for cabs is some thing around Rs.8 to 10 per km. You will have to pay for the return trip too. Add another Rs.100 for the night and also all toll taxes.

There's a train at 2:15pm that would take you direct to Barnala (arr 8:23pm), but you've got no chance of catching that.

There are overnight trains to Dhuri Jn (30kms from Barnala), but that would mean waiting in Delhi for a late departure.

Delhi to Barnala looks to be 270kms, I'm no good with taxi fares, hopefully someone can say how much this journey should cost, though you may have problems getting a good deal direct from the airport.

Good luck.

EDITED to add....

Laxman Jula (Rishikesh) is about 230kms from Delhi airport, a taxi from Laxman Jula to the airport costs Rs2200, so you shouldn't pay more than Rs3000 for a taxi to Barnala. (and that would include the return journey)

Another edit.....

Just a thought.....

Train 5609 departs (Old) Delhi daily at 16.35 and gets to Mansa at 21.03, Mansa is 50kms from Barnala and connected via a direct road.

Though train 5609 can run late, it starts it's journey in Guwahati, Assam.

If it originates from Guwahati it is bound to be late. So it looks like you will have to take a cab.

yes Steve got it right..an Indica should cost you Rs.5 or 5.5 per Km...so including toll taxes you would be close to Rs.3k for a return trip..

in any case you have to pay for the return trip, even if you do not want to come back !!

your best bet

your best bet is to take the Canadian bus service aka Raju bus lines it will get you pretty damn close to where your going and the only way to get the tickets are from your travel agent here in Vancouver aprox 25 bucks. I took this service before and once you try it you will never wanna take the train route, guaranteed... I have hard from people that they may actually take you to your house depending on their schedule, if not you can always take a taxi once you get close by.

I used the indo canadian bus too last time i visited but that time I was visiting a different city which is on their bus route. Barnala is not listed on their delhi-punjab route. Also I'm not sure if they have bus around 4pm going towards barnala/bathinda/patiala.

how far is barnala from ludhiana?

I would suggest taking the canadian bus lines from delhi to Ludhiana and then take a taxi, because I find taking a train is like hell, because you will be lucky if you get to buy a ticket even if your a couple of hours early, and then you freeze your ass off in the evening when the train is moving and there is no heat. To top it all off don't forget the damn cops trying to hassle you about your luggage and what not just to get a few bucks off you. and by the way when are you leaving, I leave for the motherland on Jan. 4th.

Gurj:
I'm in transit already. Right now at Taipei airport and the connecting flight to Delhi leaves in about 2hrs. So I will be in Delhi today (Jan 1st).
At airport I will check for Indo Canadian bus at the airport and also for a Taxi.

No you don't freeze your ass off, it is not that cold in Delhi and trains like Shatabdi Exp. are airconditioned.
I have never found cops hassling any body about luggage in train.

I second Dada on that, they might do security checks but its none of cops concern how much luggage you carry...

And if you try to travel cheap then you will get that kind of service only. Try to use any Air conditioned class OR Shatabadi and feel the difference..
