Moving to Jhalandar

Hi Everyone.

I have got a very good job offer from Lovely professional University and I am plannig to move to Jhalandar on 1st November. Everything looks so good on the websites but the thing is that I would be happy to hear the truth from people who actualy live there! Is Lovely's campus really that big and clean? Are the winters so cold? Do I need to bring lots of warm cloths with me? How do people usually dress there when they go to work? are they very formal with heels or are they casual in jeans?
I know my questions may sound silly but when you are moving to somewhere that you dont even have a clue how it maybe, these type of questions will cross your mind!
ThanX For the help!

Hi,

I can help you with some information as I myself have studied from same university (Punjab Technical University) and have visited college once or twice. Also my hometown is Jalandhar.

1) Is Lovely's campus really that big and clean?

Yes campus is really big and clean.

2) Are the winters so cold? Do I need to bring lots of warm cloths with me?

I am not sure how cold winters are in your country but here in winter temperature goes down to -5 Degrees Celsius. Winter season is from October to March. In summer temperature goes up to 45 Degrees Celsius. Winters are usually very dry and can suck moisture out of your skin.

3) How do people usually dress there when they go to work? are they very formal with heels or are they casual in jeans?

Clothing is not a big issue. You can stick to semi formal and there is no need to wear high heels. You can wear jeans in between but that depends upon your work profile and kind of people you meet.

I hope you find my answer useful. Feel free to contact me again.

Regards,
Rachit

Lovely campus is big, but lot of construction is going there since its a new university.
Winters are cold. But winter season is short ie. December & January. But you dont require heavy woolens. You just require some Sweaters & Jackets.

People dressed up in semi formals. But in educational Institutes atleast Faculty dressed up in formals.

Jullandhar is a good city of Punjab & very Modern since maximum families having their members settled Abroad.

If any other questions please ask.

-5 is extreme it can go..Normally temperature don't go below Zero..As other fellow has said Winters are mainly December and January so they are the coldest months of the year.Rest all is ok.

There are direct trains between Delhi and Jalandhar and in case you won't get that try for Delhi-Chandigarh trains and from Chandigarh you can go via bus. Its just three hours from there. Long distance journeys by Bus is not recommended as it took more time due to traffic conditions. Trains are faster and comfortable.

Preferable mode to reach Jullandhar is by train Shatabdi Express. Morning Shatabdi leaves at 7.20 & evening at 16.30. By this you can reach Jal in 4.5 hrs. There are other trains also but are litlle slow. If you tell us your flight timings then we can guide you better.

OK! the problem is solved! they are gonna send me car to pick me up in Delhi so I do not need to be worried about the domestic tansportation.
Now I have some more serious questions!
how is night life in Jhalandar? are there many bars? night clubs? what kind of music do they usually play?
is there too much traffic in Jal? Would I be able to drive there or is it crazy like Bombay?

There are a few pubs/bars. Also the bars in some of the hotels like radisson and country inn are nice but very expensive. One word of caution lots of NRI/PIO go to these places and just look for trouble.

There is a lot of traffic in Jalandhar, but a few days and you will get used to it and learn how to neotiate a roundabout. Once you can handle a roundabout then traffic is no problem. It can get very foggy in December and January.

Jalandhar is my favourite city in Punjab, it is vibrant and has charachter unlike Chandigarh (Chandi-bore). Hope you enjoy your time there. Himachal is not too far away if you fancy a weekend away in Kasauli etc.

What date will you reach Jalandhar? I will be there last week of October so if you have nothing to do you are more than welcome to hang out with me and my family.

Hi Shere - do you mean they go looking for fights with people? Why? If that's the case I guess I'll avoid those joints - sounds a bit too much like Southall, where I grew up

You know the score then....it will be the usual "why you look at me?" then before you know if fight fight fight. Its more so when there is a group of PIO/NRI males then they think they can punch like Mike Tyson and are junior gangsters with links to the Punjabi underworld because their chacha (uncle) takes bhang.

I guess you can always go Rangla Punjab and Haveli because people tend to go there with families so can't do the gangster act.

What business you going into?

Thanks for the heads up shere! I know the type all too well, so I'll be sure to give them a wide berth... you would think India would chill them out a bit wouldn't you?

Initially I'm going to be there to deal with my family property - selling some agricultural land and looking at redeveloping a commercial site we own in the city centre. I'm also looking into setting up some manufacturing opportunities outside Punjab to supply to retail contracts in the UK.

Cheers!

yahboo,

Good luck with that.

Yes it is rather sad that some folks just go there to play wannabe gangsters but if that makes them happy then I suppose we have to endure it.

HI Shere,
thanX for your info. I am planing to come there 1st of November. But if I succeed to submit my dissertation withing next 10 days then I will be coming earlier.
It seems that jahalandar is a good place. All the people who have visited there are saying good things! I am very excited! I have to come and buy lots of nice saris and find someone to teach me how to wear them!!!
but the most exciting thing is that I can eat tons of Pani puri everyday! sometimes I even dream of pani puri at night! heheheh

Ok I have another question! I have got a new offer from lexi pen in Bombay! Do you thing that it is easier and more fun to live in Bombay or in Jhalandar!!
as what I have seen on the net I have the feeling that Jhalandar is a more beautiful place and the nature is much better! I am not a fan of big crowded cities! I have been in Dubai for 4 years and not I feel like I want to go to somewhere more peaceful.

Jalandhar is also crowded but not to the level of Mumbai, plus 5-10 minutes drive and you are in lush green farm areas. Nightlife will be better in Mumbai but then again you have the bonus of being close to Himachal in Punjab.

I think one thing you have to watch for in Jalandhar is being ripped off by shopkeepers. They are used to ripping NRI off when it comes to clothes etc and so will try it on with everyone. It is not looked down on to haggle so don't feel embarrassed to haggle with shopkeepers.

Whats your dissertation on and how many words?

It is dissertation for my MSc in Project management. Subject is "Corporate Social Responsibilities in UAE : A case study of Jumeriah Group's CSR practices" . I know it really sounds boring!!! for the past 6 months I have been writing about ethics, environment and sustainability alllll the time. I have written 26,000 words. I think I am done. I sent the final file to my supervisor and I have to wait for him to get back to me.
I can hardly wait for submit it!!! I can not imagine that I would be able to read a novel or watch a sitcom without feeling guilty again!!!
are you living in Punjab?
