Ludhiana - The City of Riches

There was a front page report in Times of India (Delhi Edition) that a boy from Ludhiana has shelled out Rs.15 Lacs (Rs.1.5 Million, US $38,000

) for a mobile phone number that reads 978-000-0000.

Ludhiana is often touted as a city with Highest number of Mercs per Capita among major Indian cities and suit lengths worth Rs.6 Lacs (US $15,000

) are common sights...

Even though Ludhiana and largely Punjab do not get much mention in the forums, but I am surprised considering the large number of Punjabi people living abroad. Is it because they are not among the professional community OR because they are not very net savvy, or simply they live in the moment. No research, no thougts simply DO IT !! attitude..

The reason is simble Shashank, there are not many touristy places in Punjab, but for the Golden Temple and Jallianwallah bagh, if there are more, maybe they are not very popular amongst tourists- which is largely the point of interest on this forum. However, if you look into forums on Crops, Hosiery, Exports, Canada and Santa Banta... you'll find umpteen references of PUNJAB(wonder whether they JAB with their PUNS!!

and none about Ladhakh-Leh!! Or maybe simply because they don't want to ask about what they already know and left behind without any regrets.

PS: Any Punjabis on the forum?! Please come forward!

I agree with Amyth. Punjab is not on the tourist circuit except Amritsar.
Almost every family living in Ludhiana has some member/members living in UK and Canada. Most of them are in to business and send huge sums of money back home.
Now many farmers have diversified in to farming Vanilla, Strawberries & Kiwis which fetch a lot of money compared to traditional wheat farming. In many parts of India the ancestral farm land after dividing among brothers have become too small for profitable farming. Where as in Punjab some have migrated abroad leaving one member to farm the whole of ancestral farm land. They have become rich farmers.

Thats what I am trying to say !! not exactly from the tourist purpose but there should be a lot of expat movement in that area..

Okay, I'm 100% Punjabi so I'll check in.

Punjab does have sites of interest but have not been promoted or developed to support tourism. Maybe it's because the sites are mostly of religious significance, lack information/signage or they are too difficult to find by public transport: (Ucha Pind) Sanghol or Qila Mubarek are two decent destinations, off the top.

Personally, I think that Chandigarh has a few too (Rock Garden, Museum, Pinjore, maybe Rose Garden) that stand up as good tourist spots, but I'm biased.

I prefer Chandigarh because you don't get hassled by con artists as much as Delhi. But some tourists have told me that they find this reception cold and unfriendly. So it can be subjective.

I second that !! infact one of the reasons for me to start the thread was to promote Punjab (talk about hidden agenda)..

even though I am Rajathani, but I am in awe of Punjab, Punjabi Hearts and the best part FOOD !!

maybe of the reasons it was not promoted, might have that they never felt the economic pressure of the same...I mean its a well off state..

PS : And did I mention Dhol and Bhangra...OMG..how can I miss that...no celebration is complete in Delhi without that !!

my friend punjab is one of if not the wealthiest state in india. prime land costs an arm and a leg because the region has the most fertile land in possibly the whole world. after all that is what the name punjab means, land of the 5 rivers...although now a few of them lie in pakistan punjab after the white man came and screwed everything up. no offense to white people just stating facts. one problem now punjab is facing is a drug problem..you have kids with lots of money and lots of free time, and what you get from that mixture is some drugged up SOBS. i'm not one to talk but just stating facts again.

I think you are referring to Jalandhar. Ludhiana in contrast to NRI rich Jalandhar (daoba) has a lot less NRI families. Ludhiana is the hub of lots of heavy industry and woolen garments etc. The industrialists from this town are very rich hence the mercs etc. So the fancy cars etc are financed with home money and not gifts from abroad.

In Canada, a large number of Indo-Canadians originate from the villages and towns around Ludhiana. There is a huge contingent from Jagraon.

Ever heard of Canadian NRI sending anything back to Punjab

NRI in Canada are known to be true misers. There may be people from Jagraon but I bet there is an even bigger number from Jalandhar Daoba district.

Jalandhar is the true NRI city. Next time you are over there have a look. Most the fancy houses cars etc are funded by NRI money. The same is not true of Ludhiana. If you visit both you will understand and see why Jalandhar is known for its NRIs.

The Punjabi community in Canada is largely from the Malwa region of Punjab whereas in the UK it is mainly from Doaba. Phagwara in particular does have many houses built by UK based NRI's.
