Kurukshetra

Headed to Rishikesh in February/March for two weeks. Would like to visit the Brahma Sarovar and Jyotisar in Kurukshetra but am concerned that it is an 8 hour round trip on Indian Roads. TRavel agency quoted me $75 for the transporation, which seems reasonable to me. Any advise? Has anyone been there recently?

Take a train to Kurukshetra from New Delhi.
From Brahma Sarovar, Jyotisar is not too far off. Local transport is available in plenty.

Yes, Take Train/ Bus to Kurukshetra from Delhi/ Haridwar, whereever you are and go around in a cycle rikshaw. Should not cost you more than $3 going around the place.

I understand, but what you're really suggesting is traveling from Rishikesh to Haridwar, Haridwar to New Delhi, New Delhi to Kurukshetra, and then back again. I'm thinking that will take a lot longer than 8 hours especially if the train schedules call for lay-overs. My travel guide suggests it could take 4.5 hours to get from Haridwar to New Delhi by train. Is travel by road so bad that you would suggest going by train even though it will greatly lengthen the travel time?
Or, on second thought, would you advise the trip in the first place? Is Kurukshetra not worth the visit?

If you're starting from Rishikesh, travel straight to Ambala and then on to Kuru...
Roads are not bad, really!
Take a car if you wish.

Hi,
No You do not have to go back to Delhi for coming to Kurukshetra. You will get direct Bus from Haridwar. From Kurukshetra you will get enough Buses for Delhi which will take you there in less than 04 hrs. From Pipli on NH 1 you will get buses every five minutes.
As for the place is concered it depends.

Namaste'
Dhanyavaadah for your replies.
I'm thinking that reading the Holy Gita at the Jyotisar would be a worthwhile experience. Has the place been "tourist"ed to the extend that the experience is deminished? Will I be sitting on the Battlefield next to someone trying to selling bangles or chai?

Depends on what? Is Kurukshetra not worth the visit? What would your recommend? What are your concerns?
