Jalandhar

Next November I'll star my journey in Punjab. I don't remember who told me to stay a couple of days or even more in Jalandhar and from there to visit rural villages ??? As far as I remember was the ideal place to move around punjabi villages.

In LP and other guides there are very few words about Jalandhar, just like another boring indian city...

Do you think is better to stay longer in Amritsar and moving from there to know rural punjabi life ?????

Thanks a lot

Jorge

Just been to Jalandhar a few weeks ago. The place has a buzz about it. If you want to sample a real Punjabi city then Jalandhar is a must.Lots of fine places to eat, loads of places for shopping and above all the place has the atmosphere that Chandigarh lacks.

I also enjoyed my visit to Ludhiana.

Jalandhar is a vibrant north Indian city, very swish and modern now.
Haveli has recently been rated as the best highway restaurant in all of India.
Very popular with expatriates returning home to Doaba from UK and Canada, it serves authentic vegetarian Punjabi fare in a dhaba style. There is even a truck parked inside!
The place to hang out in Jal is Model Town Market.
There's a pub just outside the main bus stand with snooker and good beer that u all might like to visit.

HAWELI ! has got explanded these days. Now there are live PUNJABI performances on SUNDAYS. On display is old village style of PUNJABI LIVING and every NRI makes this sure that they bring their abroad born kids to this place. I think this is worth a visit !

Food is treditional and very good !!

Science City

They also have a science city there with a very nice IMAX theatre. It is very very reasonable with one entry ticket - pays all concept. It is on the Kapurthala road.
Cheers

Jalandhar(along with Meerut) is the capital of the sports good industry in India from where racquets, soccer balls, jerseys and a whole lot of hand made sports goods are exported to European and American markets. You might like to check out those.

Absolutely, wonder how we missed that point. the best place to visit for the most amazing sports goods factories is "Basti Nau" off the football chowk. You will get amazing bargains there for anything from badminton rackets, shuttle-cocks, footballs and anything else. The BAS factory (beat all sports) who make the famed Vampire bats is located in the industrial area. the lil masters (S. Tendulkars)bats are handcrafted by the master craftsman mehenga Ram in that factory but ofcourse don the MRF sticker for commercial reasons.
