Jalandhar Shopping Tips?
Hi,
I last went to Jalandhar in 2002 and I have heard that all these new malls and places to shop have sprung up. I'm not going to have much time to shop so I wanted to get some shopping tips. Are the malls any good, what is the Ansal Plaza like? I used to shop in Renaik bazar, how do these compare? I have a VERY specific list of things I want and would love it if anyone could give me specific places, shop names, addresses where I could get these things: ~Books in English on bollywood film, classical indian dance and learning punjabi/hindi. ~Kathak and bharatanatyam costumes. Particularly the big loud ankle bells. Various people have tried to find these in Jalandhar for me on their shopping trips, but have had no luck ~A Jadai Nagam - the hair jewellery that goes over the plait rahter than in it like a paranda. ~An elaborate insence holder and a lamp like the one used in Devdas. ~An interesting bangle holder - I've seen some in the shape of elephants. Any addresses, names, webpages and phone numbers of the appropriate shops would be welcome, rather than just x bazar as I havent got enough time to go round the whole city. Thanks for your help. |

For books you can try Mai Hira Gate area. Universal Books are decent enough and can order you in books they do not have in stock.
As for the malls, they are very very expensive and a huge rip off in my opinion. The markup is huge and you can get the same things cheaper from a normal bazaar. They have nice eateries but that is about it. Ranaik bazaar as you know is very busy with lots of people buying etc in malls people just go to look around or students go to get out the heat. |

A few weeks ago I went to Ansal Plaza near McDonalds (opposite Haveli)in Jalandhar. The place was very quiet and much of the retail space is lying empty. Likewise with the Ansal Plaza in Ludhiana many of the reatilers have left and the large department store has closed for good. There were more pigeons flying inside the Jalandhar mall than customers. Looks as if these malls in punjab are just white elephants destined for closure.
Also if you want to see how not to run a supermarket visit the Reliance Fresh store in Jalandhar model town, its an absolute dump. In comparison the Easyday store was clean and just like a supermarket in the UK |
