Hi, I will be living in Patiala with my family for several months and wondering if anyone can tell me anything about it (about any aspect -- food, lodging, transportation, things to do, etc.). Anything in particular we will want to take with us? Thanks so much for any information.

Patiala is one of the more cultured cities of Punjab. There are plenty of things to see including the Moti Bagh palace, the Qula Mubarik (fort), Baradari Gardens
Patiala was the main Sikh ruled princely state after the British illegally annexed the state of Lahore. Chandigarh which is a great gateway for travelling to Himachal is not too far. Chandigarh itself in my opinion is not worth too much effort, the place is like a soviet planned city with concrete buildings everywhere without any charachter. For more infomration on Patiala try www.patialvi.com this will ink to a new web site. the old web site has places to visit and can be found at http://www.patialvi.com/index.shtml |

Thanks for the info and link. Question being will we be bored in Patiala for several months? (though we have a 2-yr old who seems to always keep things exciting!)

yup, patiala is boring
If you are hoping otherwise, let me set the record straight - you will be bored. There are a few bazaars (markets) and a few old historical places. But those can all be visited in two evenings. Although there are a lot of excursions around the city. But its hard for someone who doesnt have many friends. Otherwise its a peaceful and quiet city where you can live well with your family, just dont set your expectations high.

Yes, boring.
I will confirm right now that it is, indeed, boring (have been in Patiala now for a week). But it is also quiet and pretty in places. We are living on the Punjabi University campus, which is nicely self-contained; you can walk around to get things you need. It is a bit of a culture shock for someone used to the cities and more touristy areas of India (the staring is out of control!). We *are* planning to try to get away on weekends as much as possible.
