I stayed at one of the guest houses run by the SGPC which was then newly built and had nice rooms with en-suite washrooms.
All that in a serene atmosphere, with the added previlege of being able to visit the shrine at all hours.

I have stayed at the Niwas several times. They are quite comfortable, at least as nice as a Paharganj hotel. There is also a new niwas across from the Baba Atal Tower Gurdwara which is nice as well. If you need assistance with this or other stuff, directly across from the new niwas is a travel agent/money changing office named Satija. The guy there will hook you up with a room etc. if the people working at the niwas don't speak English. I have used Satija many times for all kinds of things. Tell him Henry from USA/Sweden sent you.

Have fun, Amritsar is amazing.

To be honest the SGPC accomodation is quite bad. The good rooms are kept for senior SGPC and Akali Dal people of the current ruling regime in Punjab. The accomodation with communal toilets is worst, they smell very bad, so bad that you feel sick.

However the Nishkam Sewak Jatha from Birmingham (UK) have built new accomodation (I think near Baba Atal tower). It is very clean and worth a visit to see if you can get a room.

Forgot to add, another NRI accomodation block is also being built by a charity based in Wolverhampton. They have a very good track record in maintaining good clean accomodation for pilgrims.

From what I recall it will be located near Chathar Singh Jiwan Singh Book Publisher.

Hope this isn't too late - we stayed at Royal Inn, really nice and friendly, great bathroom & hot water!!, great food recommendations, tiny room - but that's OK it was clean and comfy bed. They organised a taxi to the border ceremony for us and generally looked after us well.

Question A comfy hotel?

Hi all,

I'm traveling to Amritsar for one night this Friday and need a recommendation for a decent hotel. My partner has a really bad back, so we are not looking for super cheap. Even Rs. 400-500 would be okay - but the beds need to be comfortable.

Ideally, it'd be great if is was close to the GPO and/or the train station as we have an early morning train to catch, but that's just a bonus.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
