I know that the UK based Guru Gobind Singh Trust have been working on an accomodation block in Amritsar after the success of their project at Hazur Sahib (Nanded, Maharashtra).

See if you can phone them and find out if the Amritsar accomodation is ready, contact details are on : http://www.gurugobindsinghnritrust.co m/

They are a charity. The accomodation they built in Maharashtra is very clean and the place well managed. It is a far cry from the official SGPC accomodation around the Golden Temple which is in disgusting state (unless you can get one of the VIP rooms).

Hotel Golden Tower

Hi Rachel,

I had similar questions, but I decided to go ahead and book with the Hotel Golden Tower simply to stay in the Old City. When will you be there in March? We will be there early in the month and I could let you know what we thought..

Hum interesting,

Which dates will you be there in Amritsar? Have you decided to book the Hotel Golden Tower after all?

You must be leaving soon!

Did anybody finally stayed in Hotel Golden Tower? We're planning a trip in northern India for may-june, and in Amritsar we're interested in Hotel Golden Tower mainly because of its good location, but i still haven't found someone with first hand experiences on this hotel.

Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Look at the CJ International.

We were there a few weeks ago - it's directly across from the Golden Temple. We upgraded to a top story suite - there are 3 on the top floor and we had balcony views directly into the Temple - perfect for photography with a long lens though partly obstructed by other buildings in the Temple complex. A very easy walk to the entrance to the Temple (so close you can walk across the little dirt road barefoot to the pavement, thence into the temple without having to deposit shoes at the shoe minding station) and a short walk to Jallianwala Bagh.

I stayed at Hotel Golden Tower. From what I've seen, hotels in Amritsar are generally a bit more expensive than in other cities we visited in Rajasthan, Uttaranchal. So a basic room in Hotel Golden Tower will cost you about Rs1050. It's a clean hotel and the location is very good in the sense that you can walk to the the Golden Temple whenever you'd like. We thought the area was very busy and congested. If you want to be close to the Golden Temple then it's definitely worth it.

Thanks a lot for your answers. We have also looked at CJ International, but Golden Tower is a little bit cheaper so I think we'll probably stay there...
