Funnily enough - although I was fine with street food I came over all cautious in the langar and shied away from the food - it was something about seeing it dropped out of those big buckets, it just turned me off it and I was sure I was going to get sick...(just me) so I went out and pigged out on Kulcha afterwards....here in fact

Omigod the food in the langar was some of the best I had in all India. Especially the kheer. Where's that drooling smiley?

Also, I have a confession to make -- I drank the water at the Golden Temple and didn't get sick. Some other backpacker told me it was filtered and I believed it, only later to find out that it's not. Not that I'm going to start drinking Indian tap water anytime soon.

I know thats what JP and Oscar said - they ate it all ... for some reason I just couldn't eat it.. as I said, I think it was the 'slopping out'.. maybe I was in prison in another life????!!

I have no idea - but its a great orange colour!

Yeah, I talked to a few other travelers who weren't feeling the 'presentation'. I wasn't in love with it or anything, but was able to get over it pretty easily.

Except, of course, the time that the kid doling out the kheer overshot that section of my plate and sprinkled it liberally into my daal. That was difficult to get around, for me, as I'm usually one of those No Contact Between Food Items On My Plate type of people. But the food was so good in general that it was hard to let any of that get to me.

Actually, I was so into the whole Amritsar/Golden Temple experience that I'm starting to wonder whether I'm not meant to be a Sikh in this life...

Its a really lovely place isn't it? I can't quite put my finger on why - but we liked Amritsar a lot.. but then in a day and a half its hard to say - maybe its because we were busy..?

Food at any langar is freaking bomb!!! My best friend is punjabi, so if i'm not doing anything on sundays, then I try to go with him and his family on sundays, and I just LOVE the food. I personally think they make the softest rotis. Ofcourse I also go to get blessings from Guruji

Filters were installed in 2004. I doubt they have much use as I visited when they had been installed and the pipework looked very dodgy with lots of leaking joints.

This was seriously dodgy. Considering they had experts and consultants from overseas in to supervise the work it was a major surprise that the large plastic pipes which carry the water from the filtration plant to the sarovar (water tank) were leaking. Amazing to see the Golden Tmeple without any surrounding water.
