HELP - advice needed from Amritsar to Dharamsala?

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to India next week and all my plans seem to keep changing. I really have no idea what I want to do now. I'm going to be alone and am going to Amritsar for 2 nights.From there, I want to do something other than just go straight back to Delhi so was thinking of Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj for a couple of nights.

My question is how can I get there? I've heard the easiest way is to get the train from Amritsar to Pathankot and then onto Kangra before getting a bus to Dharamsala.

Have tried to look on the IRCTC website and it's giving me fares to Panthankot but not to Kangra. Does anyone know how to book these?

If not how can one organise a bus? Is there a reputable company?

And how do I get back from Dharamsala to Delhi?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

The other option is to pass through Delhi and go to Rajasthan or Nainital or something?

Pathankot - Joginder Nagar is a toy train. So you would need to get down at Pathankot and catch a different train for Kangra.

Train 4633 from Amritsar (09:30) Pathankot (11:45)
Train 5ABP from Amritsar (12:30) Pathankot (15:25)

Train 5PBNR from Pathankot (12:55) Kangra (17:56)
Train 7PBNR from Pathankot (16:15) Kangra (20:45)

There are HRTC buses from Dharamsala to Delhi

For time table check http://himachal.nic.in/hrtc/route.asp

You can book HRTC Volvo A/c and Deluxe buses using http://hp.gov.in/hrtctickets/

Once you reach Pathankot, take a direct bus or taxi from there to Dharamsala. No need to travel to Kangra.

Right ! There is no need to go to Kangra, from Pathankot take a bus or taxi to Dharamshala. Most of the time you find fellow travelers at Pathankot, so you can bunch up and share a taxi.

From Dharamshala to Delhi you have direct buses. Govt run ones and private too !

It's really great that you can easily go straight from Pathankot to Dharamsala. How much are buses/taxis to Dharamsala from Pathankot? I'm a budget traveller & so don't want to waste unnecessary money but being on my own I want the travel to be as safe as possible. How much is it back to Delhi on the bus? How do I book?

Can anyone recommend any decent hotels?

Taxi fare depends on the tourist rush, but should be around Rs. 1200. Bus fare should be around Rs. 100.

Dharamshala is small place you'll find Delhi bus booking board at various places. Bedi & Blueword are two good private bus operators. State govt. also runs AC & Non AC ordinary buses.

You may check Green Hotel, or Pink House ! Both are nice & economy class places. There are many many hotels there.

Thanks so much. So when I get to Pathankot - I can just go to a bus counter very easily or get to a taxi?

From what I here the bus journey back to Delhi is about 12 hours which seems way too long so I'm thinking of taking the train from Pathankot to Delhi home instead - is this possible?

Dharamsala to Pathankot would be around 3 hrs and the fastest train from Pathankot to Delhi would be around 7 hrs 30 minutes.
