Golden Temple - Need Advise!

hey..
Need some information on Amritsar and Golden Temple. Kindly reply and enable to finalise my plans.

1) Is one day sufficient for visiting Amritsar? ( i intend to visit the Golden Temple, Jallianwalla Bagh and the Wagah Border March.

2) Are there any days on which the Golden Temple and the Wagah Border March are not conducted? Where could i get this information?

3) Whats the distance b/w Chandigarh and Amritsar, the frequency of busses etc.

Thanks in Advance

Hi there,
1.)Best would be to reach there in afternoon, find accomodation, visit Golden Temple, take a dip in the gurdwara sarovar, have Langar (vegetarian food served in the Gurdwara and eaten by everyone)
),visit Jallianwalla Bagh and then come back to Golden Temple later in the night.
.The feel of being there in the night time in amazing...
You should spend 2-3 hours in the night In Golden Temple, besides the Sarovar .
Next day you can visit the nearby markets, book a taxi to visit Wagah Border..the ceremony takes place only in the evening around 6 pm at Wagah.

2.) You can visit Golden Temple at any time of the day,any day of the week, any week of the month, any month of the year.
For Wagah ,iam not sure whether you can go there on Sunday or not.

3.)Chandigarh to Amritsar will be around 4 hours journey to max, though you need to confirm regarding bus operations out there.

***If you are running out of time, then also try to spent atleast an hour in the night time besides the Sarovar in Golden Temple...its a feel out there which cannot be explained...try it out!!! and let me know later how it wass.

globalgoldie is absolutely right - your time at the Golden Temple in the evening will be among the best experiences of your India trip. I just posted the guy who's services I use for travel in Amritsar. He can hook you up with the transport for your other destinations, i.e. border ceremony and Chandigarrh. Find the post 'Amritsar to Dharmshala'.

Just head on down to the sector 17 bus station. You will find more than enough buses to Amritsar.

Or get one to Jalandhar and get a bus from Jalandhar to Amritsar.

buses for Amritsar-jalandhar route will b available in Sector-43..as far as amritsar is concerned direct bus will bypass jalandhar..but most of the times they stop Jalandhar bus stand..allways prefer Panjab roadways coz they usually run on scheduled times and they have been upgraded too..

Yes buses run after every 15-30 min regularly..allways prefer day travel

Yes ! Manreet is right. You have to reach sector 43 bus stand. You can reach 43 bus stand by taking bus from sector 17 bus stand.

You will find direct buses for AMRITSAR. This is long journey...do not sit in middle or back of bus..try to find seat in front.

Best bet is travel upto JALANDHAR. As AMRITSAR buses stay at JALANDHAR for sometime and in the meantime..you will travel half of the distance to AMRITSAR

GOLDEN TEMPLE: Everyone is right...I like globalgoldie's post. Thats correct..go ahead and feel it !

Jalianwallabag

About Jalianwallabagh, it's just walking distance away from the Golden Temple.

I am planning to visit Amritsar again on 15th August weekend. Can anyone tell me whether Jalianwallabagh and Wagah border will be closed on 15th August?

Regards,
Samik

We arrived at lunchtime and the car left at 3 for the border ceremony - home by 7.00 then you can go to the temple at night, next morning spent the morning wandering around including Jallianwallabagh and the the afternoon in the temple..then 5.00 train back to Delhi. plenty of time.. not that you wouldn't use more if you had it, but it was fine.
