Aaaaahhhhhh i can't figure it out -trying to figure out something general in India is easy - something specific - you're having a laugh!!!

But I did figure it out for you!

After clearing customs, grab a book at the airport or shop at Gurgaon and take the 10pm bus to Jallandhar and then another to Patiala. Simple.

I know, I know - but the thing is (and this is something that I have failed to specify before now, admittedly) I have someone picking me up from Patiala/ Ambala/ Rajpura - and I have a feeling they want to be home at a reasonable time of night. This is a nightmare because I was just going to arrive in Delhi and chill out there for a day or so - just enjoying BEING IN INDIA. Then I made the mistake of consulting with my friend in Patiala, and him being middle class/upper class couldn't bear the thought of me spending one whole night in Paharganj! Have tried to explain that I'm fine with that, but this idea seems inconceivable to him. He's lovely tho, so I'm fine with that. But just trying to balance my plans with his ideas!!!! that is where the 'aaaaaaahhhhhh' comes in!

Then it's simple too-- ask him to send a car to Delhi.

It's really crazy that he should be *helping* you in this manner.

Btw, it would be early morning [6-7am] when you reach Patiala that way. If nothing works, take a taxi.

I knew this was coming! I have no idea but I think someone [mountaingirl?] on this forum would reply to that. A taxi to Ambala though sh'd be around Rs.2000 I think.

If the car can be sent to Ambala to pick you up, it might as well come to Delhi.

After a long flight, taking a taxi would be difficult, 250 Kms. mostly in the dark, I wouldn't fancy that, also the driver would have to stay overnight and return in the morning, then you have to add 'Interstate' charges, I have no idea about taxi fares, but I would imagine it would cost more like Rs 3000.

You could tell your friend that you will stay in a good quality hotel near the airport or close to New Delhi train station, then get a morning train.

Train 1057 departs New Delhi at 05:10 and gets to Patiala at 10:40.

2A = Rs 584
3A = Rs 373
SL = Rs 143

or.

Train 2029 (2031 on Wednesdays) departs New Delhi at 07:20 and gets to Ambala Cant at 09:50

EC = Rs 750
CC = Rs 385

2A = 2 Tier air-conditioned (AC2)
3A = 3 Tier air-conditioned (AC3)
EC = Executive chair class, air-conditioned
CC = Chair class, air-conditioned
SL = Sleeper Class, NOT air-conditioned

Right - following your advice, and help with the trains that do and don't exist I think I am going to get the train from New Delhi at 5.10am to Patiala. Then at least I get a chance to touch down before whizzing off again. That is what I am doing - I now just need to make a reservation! I think he will do that for me.........once more into the breach........!!

Maybe a train from Patiala to Delhi....

You can book the ticket yourself over the Internet and have it delivered to your hotel.

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!! Think all this is starting to pickle my brain cells!! I am going to stay one night in Delhi - try to sort my ticket out myself and go the next morning. My friend telles me that train 1057 or whatever doesn't exist ('this is Inida' he tells me), but either way I will end up on an early train to either Patiala or Rajpura. I will update this post when I get there. All this for one train - I can't quite believe it!

Train 1057 (Dadar (Mumbai) - Amritsar Express) does exist, though it seems a busy train, the following is the 'availability' for 3A at the end of this month.

26- 3-2005 AVAILABLE- 0008
27- 3-2005 AVAILABLE- 0002
28- 3-2005 WL 3/WL 3
29- 3-2005 AVAILABLE- 0010
30- 3-2005 AVAILABLE- 0010
31- 3-2005 AVAILABLE- 0010

The following train to Ambala is the Shatabdi Express; you can buy tickets at a special kiosk on New Delhi station on the morning of departure, though get there early to be sure.

(I have only seen one of these kiosks for the Chennai - Mysore Shatabdi, mainly because I've never looked for them, but I've been told by a couple of people that these kiosks exist for all Shatabdi trains at the departure station.)

I'll just have to wing it and hope for the best - it's not a long train ride so I can travel lowest class. Apparently the ticket office at New Delhi train Station is open til 8pm - is this right??

Yes, reservation is open till 8pm except Sundays [2pm]. Tickets for running trains are available 24 hrs at the station.
