daj and wari shopping

we will be travelling to Punjab for daj & wari shopping very soon (March), we have heard about... shopping at Ambala.... that it is better in prices and choices are good. But Ambala is a very big town.....does anyone here..... have Bazzar names or shop names...Road......town....ect

Also we intend to go to Fagwada...same again...we need help with Bazaar name or even shop name..

How much can we haggle on prices?

Thanks in advance..

Send a message via Yahoo to rikko
Phagwara has Frontier and New Era on Banga Road. If you are visiting relatives in Panjab then they will know. You will find that Phagwara and Jalandhar is more expensive compared to Ludhiana and Ambala.

Try Bhanga Cloth House near the Loha Mandi in Phagwara.

The posh shops in Phagwara just fleece NRI's. Enjoy the hospitality when you are at shops but avoid the dodgy samosa they get for you.

Not fixed but from experience they usually ask for a realistic price compared to the other fancy shops (the ones with AC and lots of fancy marble/granite).

They are pretty ok with bargaining so dont be afraid to bargain.

The same with them shops selling them slip on shoes that you can find in most UK shoe shops. It is quite normal for them to ask for RS500 for these and with a bit of bargaining to drop down to RS250 or less if you are patient enough.

I usually take an uncle from India with me as he is very good at bargaining.

Also with regards to staying in hotels. Not sure if there any good ones in Phagwara but the Radisson in Jullundhur is just down the road and is good. If you book over the net prior to going out you can get a better room rate. There is also a slightly cheaper (still very good) hotel across the road (Leo Fortune) from the Radisson.

hi jit,

in Ambala when we shopped for daj & wari 2 years back..there was PUJA cloth house with the largest variety. Just check out for them in main cloth market..anyone will give you directions when u`ll reach Ambala.

In Ludhiana you can shop at the Mall Road with stores like Neelibar,DeMarte,KalaMandir and Riwaj coming up on top of the mind.I`ve heard that they don`t bargain.

happy shopping

just Too Curious!

What is daj & wari?

I did a google image search of both. Wari's are remote tribal people in the amazon, and daj came up a huge variety of unconnected objects.

It's easy to deduce they are some sort of cloth, but what are they more specifically?

Just curious!

hi edsita,

daj means dowry........daj and wari means the clothes to be worn on the special occasion ( marriage) and to be taken to the in-laws house by a newly wed girl.........

hope this makes it clear

We have been told... about shopping in Ambala, but the name was “Pooja Sari“, but do not have the name of the market or the Road.
Thanks for that ( attitudemyown) …..now we can proceed…. toward the “main cloth market“.
The driver we have booked in Delhi also told us that The Ambala cloth market is closed on Thursdays...
