Chandigarh...worth a visit?

I will be heading up to mcleodganj in a coupla months and thought i might break the journey by visiting chandigarh. I like to see new places though i'm not convinced this one is quite worth it.

Anyone been there and got anything to say that might sway my decision?

definitely worth a day or two.

i spent two days there, the first just doing nothing and recuperating from the trip so far.

second day we visited the rock garden (an absolute must) and le corbusier's buildings. the city museum is well worth a visit as it has a well curated exhibition about the history of the city.

chandigarh is a bit quieter and less congested than many cities and a good place just to take a break.

and i believe the shopping is good.

I've spent alot of time there - mainly for business purposes.
It's a great place to chill for a few days before you head off to Shimla and beyond. The Rock garden is a must,Sukhna lake, as well as all the other walking gardens which are connected together and very nice for strolling. Pinjore is a very nice half-day trip. It's off the tourist trail so you won't find alot of fellow travellers but very friendly people and zero touts/hawkers. If you play tennis they have a great facility in sector 10. If it's on your route - check it out for a day!

yeah was in chandigrah oming from mcleod- accom is expensive there - i stayed in the dorm in the bus station for around 100 rupees but all the hotels were 500rps. it is a nice modern city- a good sign and break from the noise and dirt of other indian cities which we love so much. the rock garden is great- i took the half day tour of the city for 50 rupees- go to tourist office in bus station

i went there years ago - very different city experience from the usual indian ones - huge roads, amazing corbusier architecture, not too many roses in bloom in the rose garden. pinjore gardens nearby were a pleasure. also, very friendly uni students from all over india. wonder if things have changed much since - would like to spend a few days there again. it was dirt cheap in the late 70s - that's bound to have changed by now.

Chandigarh = Monotony galore

All the buildings look the same. Rather like a 1950s sovietesque planned city with lots of concrete everywhere.

I enjoyed Pinjore Gardens (at night) and the Aam Khas Bagh but I was in and out of the Rock garden in less than half an hour (it is seriously boring).

As for the shopping, head on down to sector 17 and get fleeced. The Shastri Market is a bit cheaper but the quality of some of the products is very poor.

Best thing about Chandigarh is that Kasauli is only a short drive away.
