i dont know about the distance to rock garden , but Chandigarh - ambala works like a local bus route. so get to the bus station and you should fine 10 buses leaving every 5 minutes for Chandigarh , just hop on to any.

Yes there are plenty of buses from Ambala to Chandigarh and more important Rock Garden is very near and Rose Garden will be near. Autos will take you in 15-20 minutes.

And the Ambala bus station is just across the road from the train station. About a 50-60 minutes bus ride. Rose garden is half a kilometer from the bus stand and the rock garden is about 3 kms. Nothing beyond 10-15 mins on an auto.

Beware of Chandigarh autos, though! They look like kerosene gensets on wheels, and ride worse.

Now you need not beware of Chandigarh Autos. Due to new government policy most of the old autos are replaced with bigger new ones and also they have allowed sharing of autos So the auto rates are very less. u can travel for as little as Rs 5 for a distance upto few kilometers.
