Panchkula is not that far and you should be able to get there easily.

No must do things in Chandigarh. I found the rock garden boring, if it was anywhere else in the world no one would be bothered about it. The lake was better and I could not be bothered to do the rose garden.

If you can see if you can go to see Pinjore gardens at night. They look quite good when they are lit up as you cant see the litter and lack of maintenance.

If you had a bit more time I would have suggested Kasauli. You could hire a car and get there in about an hour (maybe a bit more) but then you will not have much time to take in the place.

What is so beautiful about it ? The place is a concrete jungle. The buildings are mostly uniform and as such have no charachter. It is as if you have steped back into a Soviet era planned city. We had a similar concrete jungle in Birmingham called the Bull Ring and it has been pulled down and replaced. All across the world these soul sapping concrete jungles are being pulled down. But not in India it si promoted as a modern city.

Look at the shopping area in sector 17 which is meant to me the best shopping area. It is an absolute dump.

If Rock Garden was anywhere else it would not attract any visitors. I went with some relatives from Europe who had their kids with them. They were bored in 10 minutes. These are not kids who only appreciate theme parks etc. They loved Barcelona and the museums etc there.

Sukhna is nice but after a few laps of that island in a pedal boat you soon get bored.

The only saving grace for Chandigarh is that it is easy to get to Kasauli.
