| Thanks for the advice, tsk1979. I didn't realize the gurdwara had A/C room--definitely a plus. I suppose I can see how it goes when I get there. If I see the border closing, great, if I don't have the time and energy, no big deal. |

| Amritsar is an awesome place to visit. While in Amritsar a few years ago we stayed at Hotel Astoria. Pretty well maintained with restaurants around. We liked the simple atmosphere. It is a rickshaw ride to the golden temple from there The contact from outlooktraveller is: Hotel Astoria (Tel: 2566046, 2401222; Tariff: Rs 575-1450) on Queens Road, I dont think the 575 rooms exist anymore but you could do between 800-1200 i think. The visit to Wagah border is an experience of a lifetime. You can rent a car to go there and back. Auto ride would be taxing. |

| Senior Member | I second that - going to wagah border. If in Amritsar, then the 2 absolute must do's are - Visiting Golden Temple, and going to the Wagah Border. Also when in Golden Temple - Have the ' Langar ' ( Or Free Food Offered in the temple made by devotees ). Its lip smackingly good, and Vegetarian. All Made by devotees, served by them and donated by them. All kinds of people ( poor or rich, tourists or locals ) sit on the floor and can eat as much as they want. This is one of the biggest mass food serving places in the world. Usually these services are found in most of the sikh gurudwaras or temples, but when in Golden temple, its an absolute must. The other thing that you need to do is - Have all different kinds of Cuisines in Amritsar. There are countless places where you can have good food ( all very cheap ). Give ' Lassi ' - Bitter Milk / Milk & Yoghurt & Cream - sweet or salted and iced served in a atall glass. Available all over the city. It's the next best thing to the food available there. Oh, god, I am really famished now !! How I miss amritsar ![]()

| Dear Somnath, Amritsar has Golden temple, Jaliawalal bagh, Durgiana Temple and Wagah and that's it.[/QUOTE] I have a plan this year to go Rishikesh en-route Amritsar. Is it possible to see all these places in a day and take late night train from ASR for Haridwar. Our train from Kolkata will reach ASR next evening. Will stay at ASR for the night. Next entire day is for sight seeing and board in train late night. Is it OK. |

| Yes ! Book a taxi for going to Wagah, load your luggage in it and ask the driver to drop you at Railway Station, when you return from Wagah. If you have more luggage, then stay near Golden Temple. The Temple runs a regular free shuttle bus service to ferry people between railway station and the Golden Temple. Quote:

| Thanks for the reply. How long it takes from Golden temple to Wagha Boarder and back to Railway station. Can't we take dinner and then catch ASR DDN express which leaves ASR at 2215. Is there any special ceremony on the day of Dassera at Golden Temple? |

| Golden temple to Wagha Boarder - 30-40 Minutes ! And ASR-DDN express is a lousy passenger train. No idea about Dussera celebrations at Swarn Mandir ! |
