From amritsar, you can travel to chandigard by bus or train,
good volvo buses of haryana roadways and punjab roadways are avaliable up uill chandigarh, from chandigard, you can board himachal roadways volvo buses to shimla. From chandigarh its a distance of 120 kms and will take around 4 and half hrs to reach shima, ordinary buses are also available from chandigard to shimla at a fare of Rs/- 120 |

with a car, you don't need to touch chandigarh. take the route via hoshiarpur, nangal, and nalagarh. the road will amaze you. i drove on it 2 summers back.
Of course you'll get taxi-wallahs. The cost will come to something like 300*8*2 ~ 5000 bucks. There is a direct 'ordinary', rickety bus run by HSRTC that leaves Amritsar at 0820 hrs and reaches Shimla in the evening, but it takes the Ropar-Chandigarh route. I'm afraid all buses will take this route, as it makes commercial sense. |

Also, spell words out in full instead of using SMS abbreviations. That's a ground rule here.

The distance between Amritsar and Simla is about 280 km, which I'm rounding up to 300.
If you hire a non-AC minivan like a Tavera, then it'll cost you something like 8 Rs /km. Even if you don't return to Amritsar from Simla, you'll have to pay for the full round trip. 300 kms * 8 Rs/ km *2 = 4800 Rs ~ 5000

Hi Ronsaik,
My office colleague wants to travel from Amritsar to Manali to Simla. Then come back via Kalka to Howrah. Can you please help him developing an itinerary for this route? A quick reply is solicited. They want to board on Train, say, Amritsar Mail on 15th May and return on 27th May Kolkata. Newly married couple. |

Amritsar mail leaves howrah on day 1 afternoon, and reaches amritsar on day 3 morning.
For the return, if they take the Delhi kalka express then they have to board the train on 25th late night, to be back in Calcutta on 27th afternoon. So we're talking about 17th May morning -25th May evening. Hmmm... 15th: Board mail train 16th: On train 17th: Reach Amritsar in the morning. Reach hotel. Wagah border in the evening. 18th: Golden temple in the early morning. Jallianwalla Bagh and Durgiana Mandir. Car hire for visiting Anandpur Sahib or relax in the hotel. Leave for Manali by night bus. Will post the rest later. Am a little tied up at the moment. |

Thanks Ronsaik for your prompt reply. The fact is I should intimate you about the exact train departure arrival timing. Amritsar Mail leaves Howrah at 1910 hours to reach Amritsar at 0840 hours on 3rd day morning. So their trip will start from 17th. You are absolutely right here. And for their return, they will take Shivalik Express on 25th May, which leaves Simla at 1740 to reach Kalka at 2220 hours. On the same night they will take Kalka Mail which is at 2355 hours from Kalka to reach Howrah on 27th morning.
Take your time and send me the reply. Thanks in advance. ![]() |
