has anyone been to Amritsar? How would be the climate end of October?

How much time would you spend?

Has anyone done the delhi-Amritsar-Daramsala/Mc LeoGanj-Delhi loup?

Any experience?

Haven't seen Amritsar, so cannot comment on that place.

If you are planning to visit Himachal after Amritsar, then I suggest you first visit Chamba, via Pathankot. Then follow the Chamba-Khajjiar-Dalhousie-Dharamsala-Mcleodganj route. You may then go further to Manali/Shimla via Mandi, or exit via Chintpurni to Hoshiarpur or via Swarghat to Chandigarh, on the plains.

The climate at all the places will be just excellent in November!

I did the Delhi-Amritsar-Daramsala/McLeo-Ganj-Delhi loop last October. As mpop says, the Golden Temple shouldn't be missed -- it's one of the most amazing temples in India.

McLeod Ganj was interesting. It's quite a backpacker hangout, and finding accommodation can be a little trickier during peak periods. We got a bus from McLeod Ganj - Dharamsala - Pathankot, and then a train onto Delhi. It was a nightmare journey, as we turned up very late and had to get on the last train to Delhi that night. 12 hours in general class wasn't too much fun.

Amritsar will be very pleasant at the end of October. You might need a sweater/shawl in the evening. Spend at least two days there. Don't miss the ceremony at the Wagah Border. Shatabdi is an EXCELLENT way to get there from Delhi.

Yeah i will get the shatabi to amristar, then up to dharamsala , mcleod ganj, down to shimla manali etc.
I have never been on an indian bus/coach i understand that you have to get these to travel up north between places.
Weather permitting I hope to stay up north to mid/late november.

You have to plan your route, lobo. You are right about having to use the road for travelling within H.P. but a Taxi is always a better option than the bus, budget permitting.

You can easily stay in H.P. till mid-December. If you can brave the cold, you can continue till end Dec. too.

Yeah I have a rough route , from delhi to amristar by a nice fast train. Chill for a bit there , then onto pathankot by train, then to kangra by train.
I think i will stay a few days in kangra then onto dharamasla and mcleod ganj.
Then Im not sure where to go next really. I want to see manali and shimla. Maybe dalhousie?
Any pointers in the right direction will be apprecited. Im not very confident getting lots of trains/buses but I guess you have to learn somehow.

I did the amritsar-pathankot-dalhouise-chamba-dharamalsa-mcleodganj-haridwar-delhi , all by local buses!!

I would say Amritsar is definitely worth a visit for the Golden Temple and whilst your there l'd hope on a local bus for the border closing ceremony, loved the bhangra at the end when the whole audience joined in! Dalhouise is nice for a bit of scenary and pretty chilled out, Chamba is worth a visit , some good local food and souvenirs at bargain prices to boot + top scenary + v friendly locals, l wasn't so keen on mcleod ganj myself, found it all way too touristy but its good to top up on some decent western fare, meet up with foreigners and again some good buys, i don't think Delhi is so bad at all, l actually really enjoyed it as long as your assertive and don't hesitate for a moment when negotiating prices etc you'll b fine, found some baragins in old delhi nr the jama majid mosque!

Does anybody know when the border closing ceremony takes place? I'm planning on crossing into Pakistan then waiting for the ceremony. Apparently the border closes at 4pm. Does the ceremony start right then, or later. And how long does it last? An aquaintance has offered to meet me at the border and drive me into Lahore, so I'd like to get some idea when we should meet.

So how would Amritsar be as an introduction to India? I'm planning on crossing from Lahore about this time next year.
Certainly the Golden Temple looked amazing on Michael Palins show, any other sights/things to do?

We're in Delhi at the moment (not as scary as I expected - YET!) and planning on heading up to Amritsar in the next couple of days and on to Dharamsala from there.
I was thinking we could do the stay at the temple as an option for the first night, but is it ok to just turn up? This looked like a great idea as seen on the Michael Palin program. If this isn't advisable then any body got any recommendations for other hotels in the Amritsar area?
