Amritsar Pics: Golden Temple and Jallianwala bagh
Hi,
Its good to be back on indiamike after a long time. Few months back i had a visit to chandigarh and amritsar to my colleague's marriage. It was a experience too see a sikh (Sardar-ji) wedding in their home state of Punjab. The marriage rituals last for an hour unlike most hindu marriages. The marriage takes place in a gurudwara (Sikh Temple). Then got a chance to visit one of the most historic and patriotic places in india, Jallianwala Bagh in amritsar. Jallianwala Bagh is the place where in 1919, British army soldiers opened fire on an unarmed and peaceful gathering of men, women and children. It is one of the most brutal and painful chapter in india's quest of independence. Entry to this place gives a feeling as if you have been transported back in time. The garden is chilling, accompanied with an eerie silence as the dilapidated buildings still have bullet marks on them. The place evokes a feeling of pride as well as anger. The museum has a good collection of resources. Just 2 minutes away from Jallianwala Bagh is the grand and fabulous complex of the golden temple (Official name: Harmandir Sahib) which is the most sacred shrine in Sikhism. As the name suggests it is a huge 3 storied temple made in gold. It is surrounded by a huge peaceful lake and temple complex. This same peaceful place was unfortunately the battlefield for Operation blue star, which led to the assassination of former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. Pics are at http://amitkulkarni.info/pics/amritsar/ Do enjoy and comment |

And yes, I forgot to mention about the beautiful pictures of the temple. So you did not visit the Wagah Border nearby? Would have been a nice opportunity to see and experience the border gates opening / closing ceremony.
Cheers, Aadil. |
