amritsar in 1 day??

hi..i am from bangalore..i am going to delhi next month and was wondering if amritsar could be covered in a day.i am going by train.
i want to go to the golden temple and wagah border also..i have a few queries
1)is the golden temple open in the afternoon?or shall i have to take the golden temple mail and reach there early in the morning?
2)after going to the wagah border in the evening will i be able to catch the golden temple mail at 9:30 in the night?
3)we are going to shimla first..is there a train from kalka/chandigarh to amritsar?or do i have to go back to delhi?

Golden Temple is open all day.
You will need to leave as soon as the sunset ceremony ends; you will be able to make it to the train.
No train from Chandigarh to Amritsar.
A million trains from Ambala, 45 minutes away by bus.

are there any package tours available for this trip for 1 day?most of the operators on the net seem to have 2 days tour.

There is a direct bus from Shimla to Amristar leaving Shimla in the morning 7:15 and reaching Amristar at 17:15. In that case you would have to stay in Amristsar for a day

You don't need a package tour for Amritsar as such.
