Amritsar food recommendations

We are also planning to hop to Amritsar for a few days when still around Delhi - I believe my wife should see the Golden Temple too.

We'd love to hear recommendations for some great food there. Our usual habits in India are mid-day meals (thalies) at places where locals eat, some snacking during the days at street stalls, and a nice evening dinner at a more cozy place.

I'm particularly interested in Punjabi food. However on my 1999 stay in Amritsar, I visited a hotel restaurant that had a week of Kashmiri food and I swear that was maybe the best meal I've ever had in India: a lamb meat balls in quite sweetish gravy full of cinnamon and cardamon, served with a golden rice with cashews and dried fruit.

Does Amritsar have a muslim quarter where one can experience this in a full glory? Last time I stayed too short to explore anything apart from a Golden Temple, and given my prejudices from that time, not sure if the city looked inviting enough. Now I'm much more open minded.

Hi,

I might be late in replying.....but hope this helps you (if you are yet to visit) or someone who visits Amritsar later

Amritsar is heaven when it comes to food....and almost all the
famous places are almost hole in wall places....few places which you can try and visit are :

For breakfast

"All India Fames Kulcha" (yes thats the spelling)
Maqbool Road

or

"Kanha Sweets"
Lawrence Road

Both places are famous for Kulcha's

For lunch/Dinner

"Kesar Da Dhaba"
Chownk Passian

or

"Kundan Dhaba"
opposite Hall Gate near Chitra Cinema

or

"Bhrawan Da Dhaba"
Town Hall

All the above are Veg resturants

The ones serving non-vegetarian food are

"Friends Dhaba" on Queen's Road,

"Amber" on Lawrence Road and

"Sheetal Glass House" on Queen's Road.

"Gurudas Ram Jelebiwala" (sells just 2-3 types of Indian sweets and has people from 5 am to 10 pm and the shop is some 90 years old) it is in Katra Ahluwalia

Write it all down or take a printout and maybe get hold of some local who can read and write it for you in Punjabi or can give you an idea of the places.

LInk - trying to remember the name of 2 fantastic places we ate at in Amritsar - one was quite a smart restaurant next to a place called chocolate heaven or chocolate something or other???? The other (even harder) was a hole in the wall opposite where you come out of the Golden Temple - across that wide road, amazing kulcha crisp and golden with a spicy dal thing with it (How I wish I knew the name of everything!).. I have a photo... I think it was the same place. I think this might be the inside Hotel and visits in Amritsar: help! and the photo below the outside (or they could be 2 different places).

Hey Krist,

Saw both the pics, but cant really make out....its been quite some while since i have been to Amritsar now...and really its a food heaven....the places that i wrote down are some popular ones...but really you could just stop in any (hole in the wall) restaurant in Amritsar and 9 out of 10 the food would be amazing....

Its like old Delhi where i love eating because almost everybody makes amazing food and there are people whose 3rd generations are serving food at the same place....I love going for a food walk with friends to old Delhi.....

Never heard about that chocolate place...must be something new....
