Amritsar Stay and Wagah Border

Hi All,
I have certain queries.

1.Can anyone give pointers to some cheap hotel(Rs.500-800) near golden temple?
2.Give some pointers to some authentic punjab non-veg restaurants/heritage road-side shops.
3.When does the ceremony at Wagah border start? Is it the same time all through the year?
4.How much time it may take to commute to Amritsar station from Wagah border?
5.Is it advisable to visit wagah border if i have a train leaving at 6.45 p.m?

Thanks in advance

Answering 4 & 5, it should take you around 35 - 40 mins to reach wagah from the station. (~30 km). You might just have to rush a bit for the 6.45 train! But the ceremony generally gets over at 5 pm, so provided there is no real traffic jam you might make it!

The ceremony goes on from 4.30 to 5 pm if I'm not mistaken. May be people whjo visited recently might update! But its such a wonderful atmosphere out there - definitely not to miss! Be sure you are there by 3 pm to get hold of a good seat with a vantage position.

Hotel Sita Continental, Sherawala Gate
Hotel Golden Tower, Tel : 91 - 183 - 2534446 - 47- 48
You can also try Guru Ram Das Niwas behind the Golden Temple, which offers free accomodation.
The beating retreat starts half an hour before sunset.
Should take around 45-50 minutes from Wagah Border to Amristar Station.

I've visited in the last couple of weeks and in response to 3, 4 and 5... the ceremony started about 5.45pm and you'll need to be there about 15 mins beforehand - it lasted about 30 mins to 1 hour.

You WILL NOT make the train at 6.45pm. The border is a 20 mins drive and about 10 mins to walk to the car park if you're lucky.

I am positive. Our jeep arrived at 5.30, we were seated at 5.45pm and the ceremony kicked off sometime between 5.45 and 6. Definitely not 4.30pm!

Maybe it's because it's summer and sunset is later?

Niladri, the best thing for you would be to contact one of the hotels recommended by people here and enquire about the current timings (if you need a confirmation)

Also be sure you monitor the situation before leaving as you must be aware of whats happening there now.
