You can stay at the railway station at the retiring rooms there. They are quite cheap. Get in touch with the Deputy Manager Commercial or the attendent at the enquiry counter at the railway station. There is no hotel near station, you will have to come to city (about 7Kms). There are plenty of resonable hotels / guest houses near Bus terminal in sector 17. You can try sector 22 tribune road. Another option could be ask any rickshaw wala or auto or cab driver to take you to a reasonable hotel, remember to tell them your budget.

Hotel Sunbeam used to a cute little outfit in Sec 17 more than 10 years ago. When I last visited it, it didn't look that great. I could recommend Picadilly, but it might be a little more expensive than your budget would allow.
As maxqc says, there are a zillion hotels in Sec 17 and 22. You can check them out.

I visited the Sunbeam in 2006 looking for a room and the reception staff were not very bothered they had a potential customer. They kept me waiting 20 minutes before they even spoke to me. Also the place smelt as if it had been cleaned using bleach.

As I always say if you have reached Chandigarh then make the effort to travel up to Kasauli and stay the night there unless you have anything important to do in Chandigarh. The so called tourist attractions in Chandigarh do not take more than an afternoon to go round and you will be quite bored with the roses (rose garden) and the rubbish in the rock garden.

There are no hotels near Chandigarh Railway station as it's far off from the city. There are many hotels near the ISBT at sector 17, you should be able to get a place in your budget here.

Try Hotel Satya Deep and Divya Deep in Sector 22, not too far from the Sector 17 bus stand.

I will be travelling up into the mountains beyond Shimla starting on April 12th. I arrive in Chandigarh around 10 in the morning on the 11th and will visit the Rock Garden.

I then will be heading for Sarahan or Narkanda for the night of the 12th where is a good place to stay on the way for the night of the 11th.

From what I read Chandigarh and Shimla are expensive and there is no reason to stay at Kalka (train already well booked so will travel by bus)......

Thanks, Michael.

Sorry ! Should have explained....Dharamshalas are charitable inns. But charitable does not mean dodgy...some of them are like 2 star hotels.

It's an old institution in India but is on decline....
