what not to wear in Pune

Hi

I am an Indian woman.....please don't get me wrong for asking.

Is it acceptable to wear the following in a tasteful way ( not tight & cheap).....I am very petite.

shorts

short skirts

Tight jeans

loose halter style tops.

athletic sports bras at the gym

Living in the US, ones gets used to not being gaped at wearing these items of clothing............but in India one never knows.

I feel it may be OK in Bombay......even Delhi...........but in Pune ?

Yes.....No...........depends on area? ( we'll be in Baner/Aundh)

Thanks

there are lots of girls going around wearing all those in pune... i don't think you'll have any problem related to "gaped" :-)

but of course it depends on the area. Baner/Aundh is a pretty cosmopolitan area and should be fine.

I would agree to Suz. Most of the people living there are IT professionals from all over India.

I personally (am also an Indian woman who lives in the U.S.) would only consider the last one though it would depend on the gym in question. Everything else on your list, leave behind in the U.S. In general jeans are ok but when you say "tight jeans"...

hey namste_cat,

Are you in Pune or still in US? If you are in US, then what to wear in Pune might only be your speculation. As I said, there are areas (as Aundh, Koregaon P, etc) in Pune where you'll find people wearing almost all the things in the list mentioned by Tinx123. Old Pune city might not be a good idea to try those.

I just moved 2 months back here & was thinking exactly like you, but its totally different here.

Hey tinx,

You cannot avoid being gaped at anywhere in the country, not even in bombay..in delhi of course it comes with the territory. having said that, pune is a very cosmopolitan city, i lived there for four years as a student and go there every once in a while from bombay - i've never felt unsafe there. i've seen women wearing all that you have described and more(or less). As long as you can handle the stares, which trust me you'll get even if you're fully clad, you should be okay.

Nick-H, I just checked the profile of tigerranch. He's really uniquely qualified to comment on the sports bra aspect!

Occupation: womens' lingerie designer

IMO, only lingeri designer would have been sufficient..or do we have lingerie for men also

I hate to be rude, but too many people are shooting from the hip here.

I do not think there is any place in India where a girl in tight jeans or sports bra will not be oogled at.

Let's not get carried away. Let's put it like it is, not how you would like to see it.

gachchami has also said the same thing !

Who's saying she will not be ogled it....

She will be stared at even if she completely drapes herself in a saree or even salwar kameez.........

Tigerranch, nothing is wrong with it, and absolutely no disrespect or offence intended.

Just regard us like a bunch of kids giggling over a naughty word.

I guess for you, it is like the classic 1950s joke on my name (nicholas girls shouldn't climb trees. Nicker-less) --- I was fed up with it by the age of five! And yet, somehow, there's always someone who thinks I might not have heard it before!
