How long do you expect to live in India?
Most of your electrical appliances will not work in India without transformers because of voltage difficulties. Without a transformer, they will burn out the first time you turn them on. It might be worth it to sell or give away or store the ones you have in the US and get Indian-made appliances that run on 220 current.

Any appliances that you bring will need some sort of adaptor because the voltage is different in India to US I believe. All these things are readily obtainable here. I have an HP laptop, not the latest model but it is still working well, after nearly 3 years. I am not an expert in these electrical matters re US appliances adapting in India - it just may not be worth the expense of bringing them here, when you can buy these things in India.
If someone else is paying for your relocation I guess it doesn't matter what you bring, but if you are yourself, I would think about buying most stuff here rather than shipping it all over. Mod Note: Tinx - your other two threads with the same post have been deleted. They were held up, waiting for a Mod to come along and approve this post, which is why you thought it hadn't gone.

You should get your furniture if they are nice & new. The price difference is almost the same here in India & sometime even more if you want to get good furniture. I have got almost all my new & good furniture & disposed-off all the old one there.
For the appliances, I wouldn't advice you to get the things. The voltage is different in India & you won't be able to run most of them. You could use voltage step-down transformer for few, like you audio/video receiver but then if its an old model, you'll be better off buying it here. The prices are the same. I'm using my audio receiver & my printer with a transformer here with no problem, but that's because i didn't wanted to disposed them off there, as they are really nice one. If you want to go that way, its better to buy the transformer from US. But you have to calculate the wattage for your appliances. One more thing you need to keep in mind that with a transformer you can make the voltage right, but the frequency will not be change. In US its 60Hz & in India its 50Hz. Which means none of your clock radios or things like that will not work here (they will run slow). Also if you have some not-so-expensive electronics, they wont last long, if they don't have good wiring inside as the heat will be generated more in 50Hz. Further, the digital radio of your receiver will not work as the US doesn't have odd number frequency & as such you'll miss tuning to all those channels in India. For laptop & others, they should work fine here. All the small electronics like that usually have universal charger which can take 120V-230V as input with 50Hz-60Hz. For washing machines, etc. its not a good idea to get them from US also for different reasons. The washing machines in US usually take the hot water & then do the wash cycle. The machine here will take the cold water & then heat it up internally before running the cycle. In case you have US based washer, you have to feed the hot water from a outside water-geyser, which will be an hassle. Also, in India, the electricity goes off sometime & so the washers available here comes with in-built memory to remember the cycle. This will make the cycle start from the same point, after the electricity is back, where it was stopped, which of course not be possible for your US washers. I assume that you are moving here for a long duration. If your move is for short term (1 yr or so), then you should not bother moving all your items, as its not worth it. Hope it clears some of your doubt. |

Hi Tinx,
You can bring all the items except the Vaccum Cleaner, Washing machine and the DVD player. The LCD and the HP lap tops are fine. as they are definitely cheaper in the US. HP has got good service centres here. Do connect with me just before you plan the actual move and we can discuss more in detail. Cheers, Raghu Quote:
