Luxury volvo buses starting at pune station run till 9pm. There are taxis at the station which you can catch or take a jeeps. But if you have a lot of luggage a taxi is the best option. There are local trains from pune to mumbai (check for more info).
The train experts will come along soon .

For trains, there's a number of sites to check for yourself in the "links" link in my signature.
Alternatively, check the "sticky" threads ("stuck" on top of it) in this sub-forum: http://www.indiamike.com/india/indian-railways-f10/

I just made this trip last week. Against the advice of others who have lived there and told me not to make the drive at night, I went anyway. My company hired an Avis minivan and a driver for the trip. It was fine. The highway is good with frequent security patrols, and the traffic at night is much more favorable than during the day. The scenery is good so a day trip is better for enjoyment of the trip, but night is easier, IMHO.
I came away very impressed with India...especially the people. They are wonderful. Thanks India for a terrific stay! Dave |
