My friend is travelling to Pune on a business trip, will have 3 days extra. Can anyone suggest sights in or nearby Pune

Ah Khandala, one of the lasting memories I have. My hotel was on cliff and clouds were actually beneath us.

Maybe he would like to pay the Osho Commune a visit. It's in Koregaon Park and they have visitor tours twice a day.

Lonar, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Trekking in sahyadri mountain is what best can be done and planned. You can not do Ajanta-Ellora and trekking, both in 3 days. But depending on your choice-you can plan this.
