Hello All,

I will need to move to Pune to join a new job and was hoping to get some help from the locals.

My office will be in the Chakan MIDC Phase II area. Having been there last week to visit them, I'm pretty sure I don't want to live in that area since there doesn't seem to be much to do except work. As I am single, I would prefer to live in an area that has more to offer for evenings and weekends and since I won't have a vehicle, I'll have to be closer to them than farther.

When I look at the map, the next two options for living seem to be the PCMC area , or the Pune city area. Pune city of course will meet my needs, but is quite far from Chakan and looks like I will lose 2-3 hours just commuting each day. The PCMC area is closer to Chakan, but I can't find much information online about how much recreation related activities exists. I found this 2013 IndiaToday article which ranks Pune as #6 and PCMC as #16 for best cities in India, so am assuming there must be something going on there.

Anyone living in PCMC area or has been there who can comment on if it is a good choice? I can then dig deeper into the next level of neighborhoods to try and find a place that fits well.

Thank you.

You can try and stay at Pimple Saudagar . It is most accessible to both chakan & other happening areas of city ( which are around 10 - 15 kms from this place ). And pimple saudagar ( united states of pimple - as we fondly call it ) is mainly habited by folks working in IT areas & you can get a decent apartment on rent a 2BHK for around 15,000. Also there are few good places in and around pimple saudagar where you can probably catch up for a beer in the evening .

I have stayed there for around 4 years and found it fairly accessible. But public transport is not that great here in Pune so you would be mostly relying on cabs or have one for your own. I am giving the suggestion with an assumption that your recreational activities would be mainly on weekends . If you want to stay close to the happening areas then you would be situated at KP - where all the fun lies. But accomodation can be expensive anywhere between 20-25k for a decent 2 BHK apartment.

Let me know in case you require more help . Would be glad

Cheers & welcome to pune ( Assuming you are new & shifting across )

Thanks a lot Kartik!

Yes I am new and shifting across and this is my first time moving so am feeling overwhelmed in trying to figure all this out remotely without knowing anyone from that area.

Sounds like Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar are the top (but expensive) places to stay if wanting to stay closer to Pune. And sounds like Pimple Saudagar and Chinchiwad are the top (less expensive) places to stay if wanting to stay in PCMC area closer to work site.

I think to start with I should probably have more focus on work so PCMC seems like a better fit with shorter travel distance and good enough amenities around to keep me going. I couldn't find much information on Chinchiwad (except recommendation from someone else), so guessing Pimple Saudagar might be a better choice if it's where the IT folks hang out so I can make some new friends.

Everyone says the same thing about transport in Pune. I won't have a vehicle of my own, so guess i'll have to depend on cabs and autos to move around. I'm guessing you aren't from Pune since you mentioned you were there for just 4 years. Do you still reside in the United States of Pimple? How did you go about trying to find accommodation there? Did you do it online, or did you get there and then start looking around?

Thanks!

I suggest you check with the company if they have their own transport and which areas does that vehicle service to. Then check of areas along that route which you feel you would be comfortable Assuming that you would be going to work more often than to the recreational places, be comfortable with that first and then fit in the other parts..

+1 to what snotty is saying. Check with company first for their transport routes. Basically there are two ways of going around ,

1.) Directly get in touch with owners by ad's from sites like 99acres, olx or housing etc. This way you get to cut the deal directly without any brokerage.
2.) Go via broker - there are tons of brokers around that area who will do the job for you but charge anywhere between 1 - 2 months rent as brokerage.

If you ask me , I would say first come down here yourselves & if company provides accommodation then settle down there first. Then next step would be to visit a few areas like pimple saudagar , vishal nagar , rahatani etc . where in you can see in real time which one suits you the most. One of the biggest menace these days is most of the societies in USP ( united states of pimple) do not allow bachelors or foriegn nationals as tenants under god knows what pretext. So your choices would be far less & probably forced to close a deal with broker. I stayed in USP for around 4 years of my bachelor life & then shifted to pashan after my marriage. I love pashan for its more residential surroundings. I recently leased out my flat in rahatani , I would check with my society ( which is just a year old one ) if anyone has any flats out on rent. If I get any leads - will pm you the same & you carry it forward from there on.

I would suggest call up a few numbers from different internet portals to get a basic idea & if possible fix up a few appointments before you come here. Also note that maximum of these rentals would be up for grabs at month end usually & during mid month you would be mostly showered with choices that have been left out after various rejections. Do not hesitate to haggle your price & if staying alone would suggest a 1BHK if you are really not looking for an additional room. Would save at least a couple of thousand bucks which can buy you at least 2 pub nights around

Cheers buddy !

The company is very new and I assumed they had nothing setup yet, but I checked and it sounds like they are looking into a shared bus route and I hope to get more information in the next couple of weeks so I can look at which areas it passes through.

The company does not have any temporary accomodation, but I'll just plan on staying in a hotel for the first few weeks at least to check out those areas like you said.

I am Indian, but single, so sounds like I too will face some issues then.

Thanks! That would be greatly appreciated.

Good to know about the mid month timing. I plan on taking just a 1BHK place. I don't need the additional room and I expect to be travelling out of town for work at least 75% of the time during the first year.

Great links. Thanks! Wouldn't have found them on my own!

Thanks a lot Karthikpai!! I called them today but unfortunately the man said the place has already been planned for someone else. It went quick!

I have added it to my list now. I can't wait to get more info on the company bus which will help me narrow down my search a bit.

Talegaon is honestly way too far from city. I would still suggest you to stick to standard suggestions as mentioned above.

Would pm you more contacts - in case I come across suitable offerings. These days rentals move out faster than expected if you quote a right price. I had mine put up on portal on friday & by monday evening the deal was done.

Cheers !

As Kartik says its far from the city but well connected by local train to Pune as well as PCMC. And has good connectivity to Chakan . Thats why I suggested it. For me the daily commuting time and mode matters more than the time spent to go for weekend outings. And the weather and hills are a bonus too. IMHO you should first check out the transport facility provided by your company

Karthikpai, wow...that's fast! Demand seems to be very high with all of us people coming there from other parts of the country. Thanks for trying to help me though, I really appreciate it!

RahulDeva, company is very new and doesn't have any facility at the moment, but they are working on figuring out a shared bus route that I should know more about by next 2 weeks which will help me narrow down location to places along or near that route.
