Pune - Very much a cosmopolitan city, Pune is one of the cultural capitals of Maharashtra, popularly known as the ‘Queen of Deccan’.

From US, fly into Pune direct or Mumbai + taxi?

From US, fly into Pune direct or Mumbai + taxi?

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Pune from the US. I noticed that I could either end up in Mumbai then take a taxi, or take I believe an extra leg in the air travel to eventually touch down in Pune (via Delhi?)

How would you seasoned India travelers do it?

depends on the price... if you can get an airticket for the same price (and thereby free to Pune), then of course that's the better option, otherwise a train, taxi or bus... there are several airconditioned inter-city express trains taking from just over three hours to upto four hours to get you there.

I wouldn't bother with a flight from Mumbai to Pune. You have all the hassle of going from the international terminal to the domestic one, and, depending on flights, you may need to collect your luggage and check it back in again. Get a taxi from the international airport.

For changing the flights at the airport, i guess you don't need a visa. But again, check with German embassy.

I went to Pune from Dallas, TX in Feb. 09.
I flew from Dallas to Atlanta and then Delta direct to Mumbai. From Mumbai, after clearing customs, I took the private taxi to Pune from the airport. It was around a 3 to 4 hour drive and was better than taking a flight from Mumbai to Pune.
I grew up in Pune, but hadn't been back in 20 years, so it was amazing to see the high speed highway linking Mumbai and Pune. The drive was pretty good, with no hassles.
I absolutely recommend this over taking a train or flying, after getting to Mumbai.
If you search the forums, you will see past posts with links to booking private taxi's online.
Regards,

If you have a visa for US, then German visa is not required.

I've seen many seasoned travellers flying into Mumbai and then taking AC volvo bus service to Pune. It drops you in Pune in almost 3 hours after you come out of airport. this would be faster than even taking a flight. There are many operators.
