Accomodation in Pune, Near Osho IMR

I am coming to Pune in the beginning of december, and I am planning to stay four months. I am looking for a place to stay nearby the resort.

In the Pune Living information on the resort website it is stated that one can find a room nearby the resort, for about 7-10 000 rupees a month. This is with shared bathroom and access to a kitchen etc, in modern standard. Via my contacts in Pune, the places I've come across are usually at least twice or thrice the price. I would like to live fairly close to the resort, in a quiet and somewhat beautiful area, with aya service and access to a fridge etc. Do you know someone who can offer this, and if so, can you give me their contact info?

Thanks a lot in advance :-)

You definitely should be able to get such a place for 7-10,000 Rs. If they are asking you twice or thrice, they are certainly trying t o rip you off. Its the part of the business of dealers and being a foreigner in another country has its effects. Anyways, if you haven't found a place yet, you can try -

You probably are better off going for the individual listings rather than going for dealers. Usually, dealers will try to take one to two months of rent from you. It depends on your negotiation skills. Dealers will save you some trouble but you will certainly pay more. I also used advertisements in the local newspapers when I was hunting a place few months ago.

If you know anyone who is already at Osho, you might want to ask those people to share their experiences and see if they know any such place. I am sure though for 7-10 thousand rupees, you can get the place you are looking for. Good luck. Feel free to ask questions if you need any help.a

Koregaon park the area in which Osho's is situated is one of the poshest area of Pune.

It wouldn't be easy to find the kind of accomodation you are looking thru internet ( esp, the price part)

Only once you are physically present in Pune, you will be able to search it out. There are several people like you, who prefer to stay around the Osho's & while they leave thier appartment, other westerners check in.

There are several advertisment put up in newspaper for Paying Guest accomodation for that area also. try keeping a tab on that, if you know someone in pune.

The left lane next to "German Bakery", is the place you are most likely to find such accomodation. It has hostels, service apartments, PG accomodation etc, all catering to foreigners & all within your budget.

Probably once you are here, talk to your fellow osho followers in the ashram & you will find your way out.

One other thing you could do is contact the Iyengar Yoga Centre on (near?) Hari Krishna Mandir Road. They have people coming all year round for a month or so at a time and have a list of people with either apartments to let, or who take paying guests. They are clear that they are not recommending any one on their lists, but they will freely share the list of landlords that they have.

This area is Model Colony, and, while not walking distance to the Ashram, it is about 15 minutes by rickshaw. Might be an option for a few weeks until you find somewhere nearer?

Thanks for your input, both of you!

I have actually booked a place from December till beginning of March. It costs about 25 000 rupees a month. It is a big room of about 20 m2 with its own toilet and bathroom, in a quiet area. I share a kitchen with one similar room. It is about 20 mins walking distance from the resort, but since I will arrive Late November/early december, I do not want to risk to end up not having a place to stay, as I will do a two month training and I need a place on my own to rest... Even though I could have shared accomodation in the resort. The place I am renting is rented out by a Sannyasin (Osho disciple), and several sannyasins has pointed him out as a good provider. I am actually going to stay there for about a year, so I am sure I will find a more permanent, much cheaper solution, from March onwards, via some people in the resort.. So, this is not actually via some dealer exploiting foreigners in that sense - they have fixed prices and offer very good services..

But it is good to hear that 7-10 000 rupees a month should be possibly in the long run!

Thanks :-)

PS! do you think I am getting ripped off? It seems that some places are actually quite expensive. I have heard that the people who rent it out doesn't earn a lot off it.. But that is perhaps by western standards..

Mod Note:Enjoythe process - it would be more helpful if you gave your information or help here on the Forum, instead of inviting a member in this early stage of your joining us, to 'drop you a line'! However, welcome to India Mike, and if you do have some useful information for this thread, please share it with us.

Well, 25000 per month sounds too much to me !

I may be wrong since I stay on the other side of town, but Rs 25000 per month for a single room sounds extremely extremely expensive ! Had I been in your place, I would be still looking for a room

Well, it is a comforting idea to have a place to stay when you land in India. Maybe you can look at booking this place only for a short period. Or maybe checkout if the shared acco at Osho is of any good at all. The ashram has some of the most beautiful gardens i have ever seen and it just might be the most peaceful spot in town !

And 25000 is a substantial amount of money by Indian standards. A person earning this amount per month may safely qualify as a middle class citizen.

Welcome to Pune, you are arriving at the right time of the year when the weather is not extreme at all.

Cheers,
Ashish

Gosh, Andreas, I agree with Ashish - that is an awful lot of money for a single room. Since you're planning on staying into next year, you might be as well off to do what others here have suggested and look for somewhere cheaper 'on the ground' so to speak. As Ashishkec says, it is comforting to know you have somewhere to stay before you get to India.

25000 for a single room is too high, even for a posh place like Koregaon Park (the fact that it's a 20 min walk means it probably isn't).
You can look for a place in Viman Nagar/Mangaldas Road if you do not mind taking a 10 min autorickshaw ride to the meditation resort. Some of my friends are paying arnd 10-15k for a 2BHK in these areas.

If you email Giri or Sankarshan at giririeger@hotmail.com they will sort you out.

The rooms are very large double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom (no tub).

The common areas comprise a dining room, a kitchen and the roof. Cleaning and laundry (including ironing) are included in the price of INR600 per night.

I hope they have a room for you - as it's really super accommodation.

Cheers!

Thank you Haze. I've already contacted Giri. He has no rooms available. I have an offer of a studio apartment which is working out to Rs. 2000 per day i.e Rs. 60,000 for a month and i have to pay extra for my personal laundry and ironing. It is frightfully expensive. Is there anybody else I can contact?

You may contact shopladhani@hotmail.com , but I am afraid they are also full at the moment.

To all you other guys: thanks for the input. It seems that as long as many people are willing to pay a lot, the prices in certain places stay that high.

I have seen a lot of poor accomodation, and they may charge 10 000 a month for really crap accomodation (by western standard) Crazy!
