I picked up a book "Yes, I Am Guilty" येस, आय अय्म गिल्टी, ISBN:81-86411-54-0 ( Pragati Books ) when I was in Pune in Dec. 2008 - its in Marathi and my reading speed is slow and it is quite a hard slog but I finally got to the end of it recently.

So, this is a famed case in Pune - characterized as a "kill-for-thrill" series of murders by 5 college students. The sequence of 10 murders occurred between Jan-1976 to Mar-77. When I visited Pune in Dec-1978 they were still talking about it. In particular, evening business in Pune came to a standstill in late Oct-76 thru to Jan77 - it apparently had quite an impact on the social psyche of the "city".

Anyway, the book I refer to is an autobiography of Manover Shah, one of the 5 murderers. He writes in, so far as one can trust anything from a murderer, in a very genuine voice and seems like he describes, with reasonable accuracy the particular set of 6 of the murders he was involved in and of course his childhood etc etc.

As I read this auto-biography of Shah, what strikes me most about this killing spree is that it is much more "LadyKillers" -1955(Alec Guinness)( US closest equivalent Keystone Cops maybe ) than "Son of Sam" (NY-USA) or "Zodiac Killer"( SF-USA ).

On our hike today, I described to my wife the hopeless incompetence of all parties involved( apart from the innocent victims of course ).

This jars strongly, really there is a chasm, with the perceived image of the events in Pune at that time and what I read in that autobiography. In Pune at that time, people were scared *******, over this - nobody was out and about after dark for quite a while - a WHOLE CITY, it seems. Yet, these young men were, 10 deaths notwithstanding, incompetent idiots, as per the writings of one of them.

So I want to chase it further and need help on this :

1. There is another book : "OK Boss" by Narayan Puranik - I think its in Marathi. I've failed to get it so far - ideas ? There may well be other books about this - any language works for me - ideas ?

2. Access to court and police documents from that time, preferably by the net - yeah right..- but if not, what tips if any, do people have about the speediest approach for getting the original documents in person, just for viewing, not to take away with me; don't say "contacts", I'm chasing that already - actually any constructive views on how to go about this would be very useful.

3. WTF, who knows, if anybody reading this has actually got personal knowledge of the case, people involved in it, the writers - do reach out to me.

The court documents no doubt will be spread out - since this was a capital case then after the Sessions court in Pune, there will be the Higher Court docs in Mumbai and the Supreme Court docs in New Delhi, I guess.

The police docs is another matter entirely.

If I make enough progress then I expect to be in India in Feb 2010 to chase up on some of this. All ideas will help.

More lightheartedly, my wife says I'm just looking for an excuse to revisit India - hmmmm could be, could be.
