Yeah, I would be interested to get a piece of land and what better then the fact that some IMer is your next-hill neighbour
But am sure it’s not Uttranchal for me. Simla Distt is more like it. I like north Indian food and proximity to metros. It doesn’t have to be bang on main road or level. Walk within 500 mtrs is just fine; altitude a little bit higher then Solan and not severely harsh snow bound simla like winters is just ideal place for me. I have a feeling that area after Knadaghat and around sadhupul should be just about it. Or perhaps higher elevation around Rajgarh? |

MEdical facility
I hope to retire by 45..
and remain the rest of life in hills.. hope the climate and the simple lifestyle keeps me away from dreaded diseases.. Well.. thats another 15 years from now.. by that time there should have been a substantial improvement in communications and medical facilities in the hills.. or who knows, communication may improve in another 5 -7 years to the extent that I can get a broadband connection in the hills and work from home.. ... wow!! what a fantasy... ![]() |

Internet connectivity in rural india
hi Jyothi,
Broadband connectivity in rural areas is a fantastic idea. I was reading some articles on this issue recently in CSI( Comuter Society of India) magazine. It has a special issue on Data Communications. It seems the technologies are already developed for rural areas. (eg. CoreDECT) Dr. Ashok JhunJhunwala of IIT Madras is a pioneer in developing these technologies for Indian rural context. As for the implementation, there is lack of political will on the adminstration's side. Even providing decent supply of electricity is a problem. And economicaly, it is not viable as yet. how many can of the rural population can afford ttechnology? so they are finding it difficult to implement these schems for lack of proper revenue model. And ofcourse there is general neglect of rural areas in policy makers' decision. Also I came to know that a week back or so, wired broadband internet scheme was launched in Haldwani. I am not sure about Nainital and Almora. Last year when I was in Almora, Internet access cost was Rs. 60 per hour from cybercafes. same in Joshimath this year also. And the connectivity was erratic. Let's hope in a few years' time the issues will get resolved and broadband wireless/landline connectivity will become a reality. raj |

Capt. Mahajan,
Well in that case you cant afford to venture into upper hills (lets forget the remote areas).. you need to be very near to the bigger towns in the lowers hills.. Even in bigger places like Joshimath, you wont find any doctor at night.. I remember my spouse had an asthma attack in Joshimath and there was no doctor available and that too in the peak season in June. The earliest we got a medical help was next morning when we found a homeopathy doctor who comes from some nearby place. |

Connectivity
Tulip offers VPN services in north India
The network of wireless radios will allow users to exchange voice, data and video over VPNs Friday, September 16, 2005 NEW DELHI: Tulip IT services is investing Rs. 45 crore to set up a wireless-based network to provide VPN services using last mile wireless connectivity across six north Indian states. The Delhi-based company has set up a network of wireless radios, which will allow users to exchange voice, data and video over VPNs. The hub situated in Delhi will cater to the entire north India. The company said that this network can be used by banks, corporates with multi branches and dealer networks, stockbrokers and service companies. Tulip is setting up small radio boxes, which use line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight means to provide connectivity. This means that the need to set up towers in unfriendly terrain is automatically reduced. The network will cover the states of Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. “This is the first time in India that any company has tried to connect the entire north Indian states. The VPN will provide secure access to corporates in different locations,” said Lt Col Bedi, managing director, Tulip. The company is in the process of creating India's largest wireless network infrastructure covering more than 200 cities to provide the last mile connectivity to corporates. It is investing around Rs. 150 crore in the infrastructure development. Tulip takes fibre on lease from major bandwidth providers across the country and using wireless in the last mile is able to provide end-to-end VPN connectivity. |

7km before mukhteshwar
Hi!
Doesnt sound cheap but I dont have a very good idea of prices. Mukhteshwar itself is at a height, nice views, about two hours (approx) from Nainital. And maybe an hour and a half from Haldwani. Quiet, peaceful place. Nothing is available there, though, so you probably have to look at most neccessities from Nainital except the very basic daily stuff. 7km before sounds like it may be on the Ramgarh/Mukhteshwar road. A lot of people have been looking at Ramgarh and surrounding areas... this will probably make this area congested quite soon. I am definitely interested but cant make a trip there before summer next year. Maybe we can keep in touch and see where this goes. Also do read this article on the pitfalls in buying land in the hills. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...,prtpage-1.cms Last edited by capt_mahajan : Jan 6th, 2008 at 12:18. |
