I'm staggerd by that figure crclvr, where are they all, I really don't meet a lot of Americans in my travel!!
First of all - I am tired of all this picking and pecking - If the figure I quoted is wrong - I'd rather think that being excited I simply drop 400-500 THOUSANDS from my mind , and it is my fault. But does it matter? Why thw tone of the letters is so patronizing? I only wanted to share with IM-ers my happiness about the residency - and got trashed with accusations on dangerous and illegal advice, when I simply described my experience!!!! And it still goes on! Remember, we're discussing the Old Goan houses here! I truly regret I shared my experience and as a result got my joy dampened! Whatever will happen to me with Residency permit, or Visa - is my problem.
Just don't hang any legal advice giving on me. It was not intended, and was not given.I have to credentials for such.
CyberHippie's right: enough commotion, and let's close this thread, ah?
PS - GoanCanouk - PEACE? I am sorry...

Cyberhippie, one has to keep in mind that the official data released by the Indian government does not distinguish between Indo-Americans travelling to India on a tourist visa to visit their relatives and other US citizens travelling to India on a tourist visa for sightseeing, backpacking etc.
Considering the fact that there are over 1.5 million Indo-Americans it becomes easy to understand why such a large number of "tourists" come to India from America. The same holds true for Canada, GBR and other countries with a large Indian diaspora.

Cyber,
From the same report on incredibileindia.com.
Tourist arrivals during 2004
U.S.A - 468,340 13.9%
U.K. - 459,206 13.6%
Sri Lanka - 130,979 3.9%
France - 129,044 3.8%
Canada - 118,070 3.5%
Germany - 96,970 2.9%
Japan - 96,920 2.9%
Malaysia - 71,622 2.1%
Australia - 68,944 2.0%
Italy - 60,992 1.8%
Others - 1,666,893 49.0%
Total - 3,367,980 100.0%
I suspect a lot of americans come on business, or their typically short one week trips. that's probably why we don't see that many.

Possession is 9/10ths of the law, especially in India. Its incrediblly difficult to evict people legally. So, if you are granted possession of the property, its up to claimants to file court cases and try to evict you.

I easily meet/hear more people from USA than any other country - so I would say those stats are fairly accurate.

Of course, I see now what you mean, guess that's why they never call me "Sherlock"
I wasn't doubting your info at all, just trying to figure out where all the Americans were hiding!!

good point goancanuck. I wonder what percent of these actually travel on an american passport. kirpichik, apologies if my "tone" was patronizing & dampened your spirit. that was not my intention. just wanted to point out an error/typo before others thought it was fact.
........or they move in when you're not around and you have to prove title?
