What problems? The problem is that the Registry is illegally closed to foreigners.

I'd have thought the FCO ought to know all about it by now.

What a lot of people don't understand is that even locals have to pay to get everday business completed satisfactorily.

Correct. Paying bribes has become an integral part of day to day life.

Did anybody go to the meeting with the British Deputy High Commissioner, Vicki Treadell last night at Cidade de Goa? Hopefully things will move forward now and the problem sorted one way or the other. If so perhaps you can tell those of us still in the Uk how things went.

It is sad that paying bribes has become an integral part of day to day life in Goa.

the meeting date and general location has been posted on various sites for at least a couple of weeks, the actual location was kept under wraps until the last couple of days for perfectly sensible security reasons

Jonny Five brought this up earlier this year on the visa forum; at that time it seemed as if the Goan immigration staff were issuing visas on arrival for Russian tourists on package holidays.

It now seems that they weren't being given visas at all, but landing permits. TLPs are an emergency measure which are SUPPOSED to have a maximum duration of 72 hours.

Presumably someone either doesn't know their job or is getting a big backhander. No surprise at either.

It says a lot about how far India has to go in law enforcement that foreign travellers on an internet forum know all about things like this and fake "railway ticket offices" and "official government emporiums", but that the Indian authorities seem powerless to do anything about it.

no, according to reports in oHaraldo and TofI they get pre-aranged TLF's (Temporary Landing Facilities) available to groups of four or more on a packaged tour - for which $40 is paid to .. er ... somebody.

seeemplsh!
