Foreign owned property in Goa, (Part One)

Yes, discussions of tourism and its many mixed effects need to take into account *which* tourists are being discussed. The oft-disparaged "backpackers" (this word is usually uttered with contempt and emphasis on hard consonants) and budget travellers are in fact very low-impact on the environment, infrastructure and culture. The greed of big-time entrepreneurs leads them to court high-end travellers, demanding five star amenities out of keeping with local standards. I for one have never used a swimming pool (just thought of one exception, in Pune) in India or a golf course anywhere.

A couple years ago I saw the Indian govt.'s plan (artist renderings, mockups) to destroy the Andamans with five-star resort hotels. They had decided to discourage budget travellers because we don't spend enough money per person per visit. Short-sighted, to say the least.

Pretty sure you can do this just about anywhere, as Nick said, including the US. Libel, contempt of court and slander have very specific legal definitions, but you could still do all the above and not commit any of them (libel, c of c or slander).

Are you kidding? People (both in the US and abroad) hurl insults at all the US institutions all the time! It's their right to do so and I fully support it! It's all part and parcel of being a modern democracy - putting up with praise and criticism. Who Wants to be a Superpower?

This is my first post, but have been reading with interest all the comments / info over the past few months -
perhaps I could get everyone back on topic?

What are people's thoughts about the companies that are currently building in Goa; taking money equivalent to a 'purchase price' and stating it is a 'security deposit'.They then provide a lease for 50 ish months, which is renewable at the end of this period.
These contracts also contain the proviso that when / if an individual meets FEMA regulations in the future they can purchase the property for the said 'security deposit' amount.

Any thoughts / comments?????

The problem with this type of a "deal" lies with the fact that if the developer/builder decides to close down and wind up operations or declare banpruptcy there is very little possibility of the purchaser getting the security deposit back. Another thing to keep in mind is that the companies offering these "deals" are fairly small real estate outfits, none of the large real estate developers are interested in offering these "deals".

Even if the purchaser were to take the builder to court to get the security deposit back it should be kept in mind that real estate related litigation is a very very slow process and can take 15-20 years. The builder also has the upper hand because he knows that you being a resident of another country makes it impossible for you to attend court hearings every few months. The end result is that the builder always wins.
