Hmm. 192 votes, 89 saying "he didn't 'compensate' those in power"... interesting.

Either way, the poor and/or rural Goans are not voting there.

I think you just need to face the music and admit the US is no longer a democracy. Only then will things start to make sense.

1. Who are these Indians who have buried their heads in the sand like ostriches? No country in the world, has free action -- especially if it injuries another citizen or third party. In this case, the CRZ is being enforced to protect the environment.

2. India is the world's largest democracy, and elections are as free as they get, tainted, as most democracies are, with the occasional rigging.

3. The court are just not enforcing any laws. They are just passing judgements which allows the govts to enforce the law.

Just a little. I get the impression that some people who's chimed in on this thread think if one criticizes India is incapable of holding our own countries to high standards. The truth is I have many, many scathing opinions about my own country, but hey, this is a forum about India after all. If the moderators want start a new forum titled "bitch about the United States of Amerikkka" I'd happily contribute.

About that couple that had their house torn down. On their end of responsibilities I think they should have made sure their house had the proper setback. Just because there may be other houses in violation doesn't change the fact they put themselves at risk with the law, perhaps even a disproportionate risk considering the 'special attention' foreigners are getting these days. I might add that adhering to the proper setback would be the proper thing to do under any circumstance, do foreigners really need to be contributing to environment degradation?

The real issue that concerns me is how seemingly difficult it is to legitimately purchase legal property. A property purchase in any country requires due diligence but the potential pitfalls in India seem especially risky.

Do almost anything significant in India has a high risk of ending in a quagmire. Anyone who has visited India will notice. It starts at thre airport when you stand in lines only to realize it was mean for someone else. You purchase a train ticket, someone else is sitting in your seat. Hire and auto, and the driver asks for more money when you reach your destination.

Given these experiences, I find it mind boggling that people invest large amounts of money in property, expecting the transaction to go smoothly. Talk about unrealistic expectations. Look around you. ndia is a country with a lot of laws. While it may seem that no one seems to two hoots for the law, eventually the law is enforced.

There are no signs posted telling you drugs are illegal, but they are. Similarly, there will be no signs telling you that the proerty is illegal. But, it very well could be.

If I remember correctly, the BBC uns something like Consumer reports or sort TV programme exposing plumbers, electricians who are dodgy. I even remember some programme on buying property abroad and the pitfall involved but those were about Spain where a 2 families wee sold the same flat or something and another in violation of local laws.

I wish that kind of programmes were made in each country including India and people interested in buying should be FORCED to watch.
