Another reason i had posted an article from the Herald (Nick deleted this as copyright violation was feared). Goa(Or at least the Herald newspaper) considers all Indians who are non Goan as well as people from abroad as foreigners or outsiders. You just have to read their fascist articles. The other day they had on their headlines- 5 million migrants to make Goa their home- Below that was an article asking that all non Goans should leave or Goa would become slum and crime infested. Acknowledged- There were a few high profile murders of non Goan businessmen by non Goans. Stuff like this just gives the fascist ammunition and usually it will be the majority progressive Goan who looses out. I do understand some of the sentiment prevalent there as a small percentage of the foreigners and Indians alike have tended to be exclusive and set up their own sequestered communes and have absolutely no interaction with the locals.Places like la Calypsa in Baga have even threatened the local fishermen (using local muscle power- Goans themselves collabrating for money). All this creates a bad atmosphere towards all non Goans. Strangely enough- the English are the most liked community in Goa (probably cause they drink as much as the Goans do!). Anyway- What i am trying to say here is - Treat the local Goan with a bit of respect- After all this is his land!

I read the first 7 pages but skipped to here as the Brit brigade were getting too worked up.
This is a very similar situation to that in Thailand at the moment. The legal status of land ownership is very similar and expats have been buying through a bogus company route and the government have signalled they will be cracking down. Even though the law is straight forward people have convinced themselves that dishonest lawyers and developers are right and the law is wrong. Huh! Why is it that expat Brits think they have to buy property where ever they go to find cheapness, be food or sex. What's wrong with being legal and renting. Our fixation on buying has made fortunes for estate agents (me) builders and sharp lawyers as they see us coming. Some very good posts on here, The Dentist and so on yet the Sandra's & Kevin's still think they are right. God help us! |

Your very early post about the problems caused by incomers and the disruption of local custom and families was a very good one. Incomers do change social fabric far faster than would have been the case otherwise. When the change is foreign in the sense of different language and values, the change can be rather ugly, well I haven't seen a pretty one yet. But that is the nature of life on this planet it seems. I'm looking to place a softer footprint by renting for 6 months then either going back to the UK, or going somewhere else for a while. I am reaching an age where property ownership is more of an hinderance than a profit centre but then I can be smug as I've accumualted far more wealth from owning property than by having a bl**dy pension. Hope this isn't out of context to the thread. |

The chief minister of Goa has made a statement saying that no tourists are allowed to buy a property. However, if people arrive on a business visa, they are free to buy property. Also the cases where property has been bought without permission from the Reserve Bank of India have been forwarded to the central government as Goa does not have the jurisdiction to deal with them. Neither do the courts as it is essentially government policy that has to be decided..
