lots of islands for sale in philippines, nicaragua and panama. i think if you get another tsunami youll never be able to: attract tourists, sell it - and with global warming, yours may simply disappear.

dont forget the need for clean water, deeper area for boat, a big boat, a LOT of money.

Perhaps not on the Andemans but on the Maldives they do island auctions. I have a friend who got one for a mere Euro 100,000!

I have been on the island, it is not big about the size of two football fields, it takes about 15 minutes to walk around. It has trees, bushes, fresh water and an amazing beach.

2007, reality overcomes dream. My dream was to climb Mt Everest. One of my young people looked at me & decided that wasn't going to happen. While he was in Nepal he looked into the possibility of a helicopter flight up there thinking of me! None but later I heard of a specially modified French job that apparently made that ascent. I am waiting for a subsequent trip to see if they need an oxygen tank sucking amateur photographer..

Hmmm... wasn't it the (very low-lying) Maldives that are feared to become submerged in the near future with rising sea levels?

ps Turns out that link I gave earlier to a collection of background articles on the Andaman & Nicobar islands and their tribals by the Hindustan Times (2003) has changed by now, btw; they can now be found here: http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/s...n/tribals.html.

True but apparently not all island have the same 'life expectancy'. Some have 15 years, others 35, again others 65 and some even more than 100.

My friend figured that 35 was enough in his case :-).

Hm, yes; at < E3000 a year, could be worth it perhaps

So how does he get his shopping in? Boat, water plane? (Honestly half-curious, I guess.)

He thinks he has a bargain as the resorts he goes to normally cost around Euro 1,000 per night or more.

To get anything on that island you need to import it. To build anything you need to import all building materials including sand. Most comes from abroad as the Maldives produce very little themselves. I was amazed to hear that tomatoes and eggs come from Australia . Apparently it is cheaper than getting it from Sri Lanka

He has three boats, one for going, one for returning and one on the island, and rents a small plane when needed.
