Hi Volga_Volga,

From what I read, the best is Footprint "Pakistan". New edition for north Pak. is coming out end of June.

Footprint text search!

Using a new Google feature, "Google print", it is now possible to conduct on-line text searches of Footprint India (and a bunch of other books).

The service provides scanned images of pages of the book (and several pages in each direction) in which the sought word or phrase appears.

Simply google "footprint india", then click on the first "hit" which should say "book results - footprint india".

Enjoy!

LP 4 Me

I would have to say LP, the Book, the Bible, the Legend.... Allthough at times I think your better of without one. If LP boosts ONE guesthouse to be the best, it doesnt say that it will be once you get there, you and the rest of the readers.

I like the thing from the book "the Beach" where one guy is Talking about the LP and saying how he would beat up the writers if he ever saw them, but first he would ask them whats so fucking lonely about Kho San Road.

Bang On ! Do refer a guide, by all means, but take in everything when you get there.

i liked the Outlook-holidays in the hills . quite informative.

yes, it is better to leave your holidays slightly unstructured with some surprises thrown in here and there.

That one is my favorite too.

I am also using "Cadogan Guides: India" by Frank Kusy (out of print) link, which has really helpful routing suggestions.

and Insight Guides: South India link

The Eyewitness is a beautiful and informative guidebook. But if you are a budget traveller, I think the hotel listings are a bit too upscale.

I went for Footprint even though I really take a mix of all of them. At the moment I've got 11 different ones out of the library !

I tend to anticipate where I'll be visiting and ( copyrights .. I know ) photocopy the hotel / food listings pages that could be useful. I then compare and decide. I do, however, like to look around for non listed places to avoid the same faces in each place !

I think if I had only one to choose from, I thing the Footprint for sure.. they seem to try harder and just have 'my' take on things ( depending on the author I guess.. )

LP maps usually get photocopied with loads of scribbles over it. Avoids that 'guidebook' moment when you're lost

DK Eyewitness is my choice, the great thing about is that the pictures remind me of where I've been and reading each section again lets me relive the journey. Is great to have always handy just to pick up and spend an hour cruising.

Does anyone remember that ‘Indian’ travel guide? I mean a thick travel guide published by an Indian publishing house. I’ve seen this at a bookshop in Bangalore. It cost 400rs. The contents looked interesting but the cover was lousy………

I could see on the stalls LP Goa, LP South India etc., not a bad idea as the size of the books to be carried is small.

I've got the previous edition of LP guide and instead of buying the newest edition I was gonna buy the Footprint guide, which is more recent 2004 than the current LP 2003.

Anyone use the footprint guide?? How is it compared to LP?

thanks
