Which company's food products do you prefer?

We all love a good curry but which of these company's spice products do you like best? When the poll is complete the Forum Leaders at Indiamike will notify the most popular company of the results of the poll and with the endorsement request that a substantial hamper be supplied to the Big Cheese Mike himself, or alternatively me!

Patak's Tandoori marinade is my favorite. Before I went to India, I only used it with chicken. Now I use it more often with fish.

Patak's, because they have a double decker bus that travels around festivals selling their food - ace! I went there at Glastonbury & it was the best food to have passed my lips in days - with a pint of cider of course!

MTR makes some good stuff. The bhindi masala is very good, and Bisibele bath too!

I have never seen any Sharwood product in US, but Pataks are available here. I have tried the pickel and it was OK.

Why would you use these processed products?
MTR do good boxes spices where you can't get anything else but - again - you can buy these fresh herbs and spices in your local market wherever you live.
I think that I live in the "Old School" of people who think that food is made by me and not from a packet or jar and that is what I gave to my family. I taught my children, from a young age, how to cook and my 30 year old son would no more think of a eating a jar of that stuff than throwing himself of the nearest bridge!!!!!

I have never seen Sharwood's in USA. I tried Patak's mango pickle and it was OK.

Never seen Sharwoods too. We use Pathak's Madras curry masala quite frequently. Priya products are very good too and have a more home like taste for me, it's from Andhra.

I love MTR's rasam and sambhar paste (not powder), {ickle from Priya, chana masala, pawbhaji and garam masala from Badshah and Shan's all sort of masales, They have great marinades.

I don't know what is Pataks or Sharwoods... i assume its a readymade gravy combination coming in a packet. I gather from newspaper reports that their chicken tikka masala is very good.... but not the version that Indians living in India eat...

In India, people do not use readymade gravies because every dish has different ingredients and even for the same dish, the proportions differ from place to place. For example, Kolhapur and Guntur use TOO much chillies in their dishes of the same names [too much EVEN by Indian spicy standards]. The entire western coast has coconut put into almost everything... but if you taste the sambhar; it will be subtly different in Chennai, Pallakad and Kochi. Even within the same town, different communities will prepare their sambhar in subtly different ways. People in Gujarat put a wee bit of sugar or jaggery even in daal and veggies... which is considered "horrors" by a Punjabi or Hyderabadi migrated to Gujarat.

Nowadays, busy people in cities have begun to buy readymade meals... but not really in packets. One can order even from an ordinary hotel/ roadside shack in Mumbai and they give you home delivery. The variety is mind boggling.... we have ended up ordering five different cuisines from the same restaurant at the same time; to satisfy different preferences... and most of the food was OK if not outstanding.... but then so was the price...

charlotte, I wouldn't think of bridges and their altitude either... but I do go on Himalayan treks and I did use a readymade dish on two days in my last trek. Not readymade gravies .... just the whole dish in a heat and eat pack. [amritsari chhole and daal makhanii... rice had to be cooked, however..] After walking for nine hours on those two days, even our local porters had barely enough energy left to fetch water for the kitchen.... let alone cook a meal.

I agree with you Charlotte, nothing like cooking a meal using fresh ingredents. It may take more time, but I can't help but think it is better for your body, and my tounge appreciates it too.
If I had to vote it would be for Deep, for those days when I have no time.

I live with a flatmate - to make stuff from scratch would mean taking over our (small) pantry with spices!
So Pataks gets my vote, yum.

if any of you get spices from a brand called "Shaan" - thats THE BEST.

Its from a company in Pakistan.
