Worst: Chennai, Delhi, Ahmadabad (just becuase they use diesel and I can never breathe.)

Best: Hyderabad! Almost always go anywhere, fair on the price if they dont use the meter, very kind.

especially with women, these chaps tend to act up. My wife's office colleague was slashed in the face by a rick driver because of an argument with the criminal's driving.

Apparently words were exchanged, and she had told him to take a hike; stewed, the criminal waited till she came out of the restaurant, walked upto her and slashed her face.

and then he disappeared. she had to get hospitalised for some serious face work.

weird uncommon shite. more so when drunk, in winter and late night. figure it must be the insult and taunts from a 'woman' that led him to do it. Guess, he couldn't take it as it good as he gave and so resorted to the criminality.

Digital Drifter - I was really disturbed to hear about your wife's friend's experience. Crazy things!! there are other horror stories too...i believe there was even a Tamil movie (AUTO? or TAXI? - don't remember the name), starring Rajnikanth...playing an auto rickshaw driver who couldn't take an insult from a girl..so he raped her..and then the girl was forced to consent with him?! i haven't seen the movie myself..so i'm not sure of the ending..maybe some of the IMers have seen it?! I was also told that a lot of rickshaw/taxi drivers copycat movie scenes...as if they're heroes or something.. i don't know how far that's all true....
anyhow..hope your wife's friend has completely healed emotionally and physically.

no auto wants to go where you want to go.
if you're lucky - auto #15 will concede.
when they do concede - they ask for extra money. over and above the meter.
most of them meters are rigged.
they never have loose change - sometimes no notes either.
somedays - no autowallah's seem to know the direction to anywhere.
somedays - there just are no auto's to hail.

You can still talk to them in their staccato Dakhani, I guess.

After you stop cursing them, because they are right up there with Chennai now as amongst the worst.

That's fine if you plan ahead, but I found you can't just call a cab in India and expect them to be at the door in 10 minutes. They're usually booked hours in advance for airport runs etc.

The best auto drivers in India are the ones in Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala.
