they were motorized rickshaws, but our driver told his they generally refer to them as tuk-tuks. The Ranakpur we were in was in Rajasthan and it was out in the countryside not to far from the infamous Jain temple. It was quiet, a luxury it seems in India, and free of pollution unless you count the cow patties!

I found the most dangerous thing for me about India was the temptation to become very lazy. There is always someone who is willing to run your errands and do your chores for you for a couple of rupees. Also it's not really a good idea to get into the habit of just solving problems by throwing money at them. I don't have enough to get away with that sort of attitude at home and besides it turns you into a not very nice person very quickly.

Strange, no mention of "other tourists" these are the people that really get on my goat on a trip to India. Clutching their copy of "the bible" and huddling in little groups intent on expounding their particular theory on how India stinks.
I personally find these kind of people a bore and they often impact on my enjoyment of a trip around India. As they argue the toss over prices on the ground against those stated in their 1996 Lonely Planet.
These people cultivate an atmosphere of us versus them, that whities all too often fall for!! Spreading exaggerations and misinformation they lead others to believe they are also being scammed and cheated which is often not the case, rather a set of misguided perceptions blown into a kind of mythical fact!!!

well many a true word ....
yes but these tourists arnt an "indan hazard" are they....
and well if they are so hell bent on holding on to ther precious image of indians all being impoverished and india being a 3rd world country... they are free to do so, comming as they do from the "free world". who cares. we are still the 4th biggest economy in the world, richest uk citizen is still indian, 1/3rd of nasa and microsoft is not from bolivia etc. etc.

wonder if they come here to see the taj mahals and anjana beaches and jaisalmer forts and lunar landscapes (of ladakh) or to see the potholes beggars garbage and the "indian style toilets" (why cant they pay 4 $ instead of 2? with 2 $ in the west, they wont even get to enter most hotels will they? well they are on a collision course to discover "trailer trash" india, if you ask me.)

====>>>>> the above point by you is to be attributed to beavis and butthead mentalities they they carry along wth them, along with the "bible", the gas masks, 5 years supply of "anti malaria, filaria, aids, jaundis, alzeimer's, A.D.D., tubercoulosis, hypothermia, black fever" combi pack, and stun guns (for touts and scamsters... 99% on subcontnental population if you ever ask them).

well you got your spine and heart in place...... long may you run.... hope inda doesnt disappoint you

Don't over look
HOT WATER
No kidding. In India, always try to turn on the cold water first. And never assume that just because the faucet is on the left, or on the right, or is marked COLD, that it is actually the COLD water. It is soooooo easy to get a serious scalding in India (where you are lucky enough to actually have hot water on demand). Most geysers, if not all, have no provision for controlling how hot the water gets. And in many many cases, strange but true, the shower head may be hooked up ONLY TO THE HOT WATER. Use caution in India bathrooms. They are also very slippery!

"The chief hazard is my own trepidation".. one of the better answers to this poll easily.

reminds me of a piece of advice i read from a lady somewhere , here or TT or LP...

"get rid of your paranoia and gas masks... and come over with an open mind" ....

or something down those lines.. i am sure about the first first 10 words....last 10 more or less those words....

hope you had and will again have a nice time amidst the many ebbs and flows of india and indian life.

I stopped in Chittaugarh on my way from Bundi to Udaipur. The fort really is worth seeing. It's the largest fort in Asia and takes a good 3 hours, by auto rickshaw, to see most of it.

cool !!!

glad you liked it....did you take in all the "stories", "tales of valour" and "legends" associated with this fort?

i frankly dont know another one in india wth as much history, save perhaps the dev giri fort in aurangabad (which also matches this one in overall "awesome-ness", though not in "size")

BTW, a nice place to get a shot (ie. for a camera) of the entire span of the fort is from "the bridge on the river ....gambhira", (which flows through chitore city).

would need a camera with a good zoom lens though. - to get a good shot of this same fort, from "the bridge on the river KWAI ", would need a camera with a slightly better zoom lens
